Police: Man tried to toss boys in front of train

  Eyewitness NewsRAMSEY, N.J. -- A New Jersey man has been charged with attempted murder and kidnapping after authorities said he tried to throw two young brothers in front of a train that was pulling into a station.

The boys, ages 7 and 9, were with their mother and grandmother at a New Jersey Transit station in Ramsey on Monday afternoon when the boys moved toward the platform's edge to see a train, police said.

Authorities say 47-year-old David Howard, of Wyckoff, approached the boys around 2:30 p.m. and put the 7-year-old in a headlock. They say he then grabbed the 9-year-old by the left shoulder and moved both toward the tracks.

The mother and grandmother intervened, and the boys broke free. The women then held Howard for police, and he allegedly spit at one officer while being arrested.

It wasn't clear why Howard approached the boys or why he appeared intent on harming them, according to authorities, who were trying to determine whether he had been using alcohol or drugs. The boys' mother told police that Howard had been sitting on a bench and spitting on the ground, and that he appeared to be intoxicated.

Howard, who also faces charges of aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a police officer, is being held on $500,000 bail. Authorities do not know whether he has an attorney

Camden makes moves to disband police force

  Eyewitness NewsCAMDEN (WABC) -- Camden's city council has taken a major step toward disbanding the city police force to make way for a new county force.

The City Council on Monday agreed to hire Lanuel Ferguson as a consultant. The former New Jersey State Police major will represent the city's interests during the changeover.

The county police force is a new agency. But so far, no town besides Camden has agreed to hand over its patrols.

The city, which is among the nation's most dangerous, believes it can have more officers on the street under a new system. But it also means that all of the 270 officers now with the Camden Police will be laid off by year's end.

Police unions are trying to stop the change.

Police: Missing Drexel student found dead

  Eyewitness NewsPHILADELPHIA -- Police in Philadelphia say the body of a missing Drexel University student has been found in the Schuylkill River.

Relatives said 18-year-old freshman Stevens Glemaud of West Orange, New Jersey had been missing for more than two days.

They say he disappeared from campus just hours before they came to help him move back home for the summer.

Drexel officials say Glemaud was last seen leaving his west Philadelphia dorm early Saturday. Police said there were no signs of foul play.

A police spokeswoman said Monday night that a body recovered from the river that afternoon near the Philadelphia Museum of Art had been identified as that of Glemaud. She said the death is being treated as a drowning.

Drexel is a private university in Philadelphia serving about 23,500 students.

Police investigate car fires in Englewood

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (WABC) -- A row of cars went up in flames early Sunday morning in Englewood, New Jersey.

Now police and the cars' owners are trying to find out how it happened and who is responsible.

At least five cars were burned out in the suspicious fires that broke out at about 3 a.m.

It happened along West Palisade Avenue.

"My neighbor woke me around 3 o'clock and said she heard some noises, like some popping sounds," said resident Kenneth Walker.

"She looked out the window and my car was on fire."

Walker woke up to see his 1986 Fiero burned out.

"I loved that car, it was in really good shape," he said. "It only had 73,000 miles on it, for a 25-year old car."

One witness overheard investigators saying that someone may have driven down West Palisade Avenue and thrown incendiary devices at the cars.

Two hours after the cars were ablaze, families ran for cover when flames broke out at a house.

"I was sleeping when someone sudden came in running and they yelled out there's a fire in the house and we all ran outside," said resident Jose Rengifo.

Investigators believe the house fire was set at the same time as the car fires, but smoldered for a couple of hours before the flames started.

Investigators from the Bergen County Sheriff's officers and the Englewood Police Department have been on the scene.

The city's Memorial Day Parade is set for Monday and will not be affected by the investigation.

Police to beef up security around Prudential Center

  Eyewitness NewsNEWARK -- Newark police say they'll be increasing security around the Prudential Center and are trying to reassure the public that the area is safe for the upcoming hockey playoffs following a spate of violent assaults that took place after a concert last week.

Police Director Samuel DeMaio says police have made more than a dozen arrests of juveniles and young adults for strong-arm robberies and assaults in Newark's downtown area since the post-concert assaults.

Earlier this week, in an apparently unrelated incident, two off-duty detention officers were shot, one fatally, outside a bar near the Prudential Center.

The Eastern Conference Finals between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers will take place at the arena on Saturday and Monday.

City officials insist the recent incidents are isolated.

Deliberations continue in Hackensack police chief's trial

  HACKENSACK -- Jurors weighing the case of Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa have completed their first full day of deliberations without reaching a verdict.

The panel, which got the case Monday afternoon, asked to rehear some testimony and review some police statements on Tuesday.

Zisa was suspended without pay in 2010 after being charged with official misconduct and insurance fraud. Prosecutors say he removed his girlfriend from the scene of a 2008 accident in which she was suspected of being intoxicated, then filed false information in an insurance claim.

The chief's also accused of covering up an investigation stemming from a 2004 assault and robbery in which his girlfriend's sons were suspects.

But Zisa's attorney claims the case based on lies and was brought as a political favor to Zisa's enemies.

No charges filed against cops in fatal police shooting

  Eyewitness NewsNEW BRUNSWICK -- Outraged family members met with a New Jersey prosecutor Friday after a grand jury declined to file charges in a fatal police shooting in New Brunswick.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan announced Thursday the panel decided not to indict police officers Brad Berdel and Daniel Mazan in the shooting death of 46-year-old Barry Deloatch.

Prosecutors say Deloatch ran off Sept. 22, 2011, after the officers approached him and two other men. A subsequent chase ended with Berdel shooting Deloatch.

Officials say Deloatch threatened the officers with a board. The family says he was unarmed.

Deloatch's sons say they're devastated.

Kaplan says the grand jury met for 11 consecutive weeks, heard 57 witnesses, and reviewed 280 exhibits.

Kaplan says the case will undergo an administrative review by the police department.

A lawyer for the family says Kaplan hasn't assured them that steps have been taken to prevent similar incidents.

Police make arrest in Seton Hall shooting

  Eyewitness NewsSOUTH ORANGE (WABC) -- Police have made an arrest in the shooting of a Seton Hall University student.

Authorities say 20-year-old Joseph Fowler was one of three people who broke into an off-campus apartment in South Orange Tuesday night.

One student in the apartment was shot in the arm, while another was pistol-whipped.

Police say Fowler is a former Seton Hall student.

The two other suspects are still on the loose.

Officers received reports of shots fire just after 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grove Terrace Apartments. Moments later, a student showed up at the station saying he'd been shot.

Police have said the attack was not random.

Police investigate deadly shooting in Plainfield

  Eyewitness NewsPLAINFIELD (WABC) -- Police are investigating a deadly shooting in New Jersey.

The incident happened at Roosevelt Avenue, near East Front Street, in Plainfield around 5:30 a.m.

Authorities were called to the scene to a report of a person down in the roadway. They initially thought it was a pedestrian who had been struck by a hit-and-run driver. But as they looked closer, they realized it was a gunshot victim.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and no suspects are in custody.

New Jersey police shoot suspect following chase

  Eyewitness NewsBRICK TOWNSHIP (WABC) -- An investigation is under way in New Jersey after a state trooper shot a man early Wednesday morning in Ocean County.

The shooting came after a long cross-state police chase that ended in Brick Township.

Investigators say the pursuit began when a trooper attempted to stop 30-year-old Michael Zaun for a motor vehicle violation in West Trenton around 12:30 a.m.

Zaun allegedly fled along Interstate 195 and the Garden State Parkway, eventually ending up on the front lawn of a home.

That's where the trooper shot him as he tried to run to the front door of the home.

Zaun was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

No troopers were injured in the incident.

Troopers reported that Zaun fired a gun during the vehicle pursuit. Zaun's vehicle has not yet been searched. It was impounded and taken to Hamilton Station as evidence, pending an application for a search warrant.

Detectives learned that Zaun's vehicle was involved in a police pursuit in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, earlier in the evening, but the driver was not apprehended during that incident.

The Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is investigating the incident.

No charges have yet been filed.

The names of the troopers involved are not yet being released. Typically, troopers involved in shooting incidents are temporarily placed on administrative leave.

Report: 3 NJ state police commanders reassigned

  Eyewitness NewsTRENTON, N.J. (WABC) -- Three state police commanders have been reassigned as officials continue to probe allegations that a caravan of luxury sports cars received an unauthorized, high-speed police escort down the Garden State Parkway, according to a published report.

Maj. Robert Catullo, the commander of the troop overseeing northern New Jersey, was among those reassigned late Friday, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/IkIyAC), citing three unidentified people with knowledge of the moves. Also moved were Catullo's deputy commander, Capt. Michael Cerisano, and a region commander, Capt. Warren Moore.

It wasn't clear what role, if any, the transferred troopers might have played in the escorts or where they will now be stationed.

State Police Lt. Stephen Jones said 10 commanders were transferred overall Friday in "a re-alignment aimed at the Operations Branch." Jones said the transfers came in light of recent ongoing internal investigations, but did not say how many of the transfers related to the high-speed escorts. He also declined to identify the troopers involved.

Two troopers were suspended without pay last Monday after news reports recounted witnesses who said they saw the caravan of a few dozen high-performance luxury cars speeding down the Garden State Parkway at 100 mph on March 30, escorted by two state police cars. A station commander also was reportedly reassigned Monday.

The 54-year-old Catullo, a 30-year veteran of the force, must retire by year's end because he will reach the state police's mandatory retirement age. The 53-year-old Cerisano has been a trooper for about 27 years while Moore, 51, has been a trooper for about 24 years.

Catullo is one of 16 majors in Fuentes' command staff, according to the state police website. The majors are overseen by four lieutenant colonels who report directly to Fuentes.

Catullo led Totowa-based Troop B, which covers 2,807 square miles and about 5 million people in northern Jersey. The job of commander there is one of the most powerful and coveted jobs within the state police and includes overseeing the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

The troop is also responsible for working closely with the U.S. Secret Service to escort and protect dignitaries, including presidents, cabinet members and military generals, according to the agency's website. _

Family disputes police claim of elderly abuse

  Eyewitness NewsWEST NEW YORK (WABC) -- A New Jersey woman is facing elderly abuse charges after police say she barricaded her mother-in-law inside her home in West New York last week, but the family diputes the claim and says they will fight the charges.

Police say they were responding to a call of animal abuse after it was reported that there was a large number of cats residing in the basement of the home. When they arrived at the house, a neighbor directed them to a basement apartment, where they say the door was barricaded from the outside with a shovel.

Authorities removed the shovel and found 89-year-old Delphine Linden inside. They say she was upset and very disoriented.

As officers were talking to her and trying to determine her mental status, her daughter, 58-year-old Piedad Von-Der Linden, arrived. She reportedly said she left her mother-in-law at home for only two hours to go to church.

Police called an ambulance after the mother-in-law was unable to answer basic questions and exhibited further altered mental status.

Authorities say Von-Der Linden became agitated and told cops they were harassing her. She was placed under arrest and charged with neglect of an elderly person.

Police say they could not determine how long Linden was barricaded in the basement, but that there was no other way out of the house besides the door that was blocked with the shovel.

The family, however, says police made terrible assumptions and are totally wrong in this case. Both Von-Der Linden and Linden say there were many ways out of the basekment, and that the shovel was there so the door wouldn't blow open, which would have allowed Linden's cat, Peppy, to run away. She also claims she was disoriented and confused because she became frazzled when police busted in.

Linden says she loves her daughter-in-law, and that she was never barricaded inside or abused.

Suspect steals police cruiser during NJ break in

  Eyewitness NewsEDGEWATER (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey spent Monday morning searching for one of their own squad cars.

The cruiser was stolen by a suspect during an attempted break in of a jewelry store in Edgewater.

Police responded to the River Road store for a burglary in progress just after 1:30 a.m.

They caught two suspects attempting to break into the jewelry store, but a third suspect made his getaway in a marked police cruiser that was left unoccupied by one of the responding officers.

Police found the cop car around 9 a.m. a few miles away in Teaneck. The suspect is still on the run.

No officers were injured.

Police release photos of Newark store shooting suspect

NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- Police are asking for the public's help after the owner of a mini mart in Newark was shot and killed.

The shooting happened Tuesday evening at the JNC Mini Market located at 346 14th Avenue corner of South 18th.

When Newark Police arrived, they found 37-year-old Miguel Torres shot inside the store.

He was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Homicide investigation is being conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force and the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and investigators are currently viewing surveillance footage from around the location and other leads at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Newark Police.

Protesters angry over police officer's acquittal

NEWARK (WABC) -- Dozens of people protested in Newark on Tuesday, angry about a jury's decision to acquit a police detective on charges he used excessive force during a scuffle.

The incident was recorded by a surveillance camera and Eyewitness News was the first to show you the video.

"No justice, no peace," the protesters chanted. "Stop police brutality in the black community!"

The two minute video captured a plain clothes narcotics detective confronting 15 year old Travis Rattray back in March 2010.

Detective Angel Pared checked his pockets then all of a sudden unloads, punching him in the face and slamming him into a window.

Travis and his mother gave reporter Phil Lipof the exclusive video and interview.

Travis and his mother didn't say a word on the steps of city hall on Tuesday because they're worried it could hurt their civil lawsuit, but they came here to show they're still fighting the city, the police department and the officers involved.

A jury found Pared not guilty last Thursday of aggravated assault, the most serious charge he faced, but they were deadlocked on three lesser charges including falsifying reports.

Protestors believe he should be fired.

"You have to be Stevie Wonder not to see that this baby was clearly punched by this officer. I don't know what this jury was thinking," demonstrator Donna Jackson said.

"We're saying when he comes up for departmental review, we sound the drum and raise all the hell we need," demonstrator Zayid Muhammed said.

Newark Police officer aquitted of assaulting teen

  Marjie Mohtashemi, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- A not guilty verdict was reached for a Newark Police detective accused of assaulting a teenager, but his legal troubles may not be over yet.

A jury acquitted Angel Pared of the most serious charge he faced, for a March 2010 scuffle that injured a 15-year-old boy.

But, the jury deadlocked on three other counts, of official misconduct and falsifying public records.

Prosecutors say they'll decide later whether to retry him on those charges.

Police ID suspect in 2-year-old's shooting

NEWARK (WABC) -- A young child was fatally shot in Newark, and police now say they are looking for 27-year-old Wakir Bryant.

The 2-year-old boy, identified as Mikhy Robinson, was shot in a house on St. James Place at around 10:30 a.m.

Neighbors say whatever was going on inside the home started as early as 4 a.m.

"It sounded like a dispute, and the son was in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Tyree Williams

The shooting police say, happened at about 9:48 this morning. The child's mother, and Wakir Bryant, rushed the toddler to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a half an hour later.

Friends of the family came to the scene along with relatives of the victim, who would not speak as they were overcome with emotion, as the reality of the loss sank in.

Newark and Essex county investigators are still trying to piece together how this tragedy unfolded. The mother was being questioned, but Bryant who was with her and the child inside at the time of the shooting left the hospital and police are now searching for him.

Bryant is now wanted for aggravated manslaughter and weapons offenses.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said, "I am saddened by this tragic and senseless loss of life and extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the infant. The investigation into this incident is in the very early stages and police have yet to clarify all of the details surrounding the case at this time. Nevertheless, I am confident that the hard working investigators assigned to the Essex County Homicide Task Force will conduct a thorough investigation in the pursuit of justice and closure for the family."

Police were looking a white four door Pontiac newer than 2000, with a broken rear passenger brake light.

It was the 90th homicide of the year in Newark.

Suspect critically injured in shootout with police

  Adam Stephan, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- A suspect was injured during a police involved shooting in Newark.

It happened Monday just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Livingston Street.

NJ State Police troopers and Newark Police officers were both pursuing the suspect apparently, according to police scanners, for his involvement in a carjacking.

The chase ended in a crash and shots were exchanged between the cops and the suspect.

The suspect was shot multiple times and is being transported to University Hospital in critical condition.

Multiple crime scenes have been established in the area as a result of the pursuit.

NJ boy dead; police search for hit-and-run driver

  Eyewitness NewsLAKEWOOD, N.J. (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are searching for a hit-and-run driver who killed a 12-year-old boy.

It happened on South Clover Street in Lakewood at about 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Police say the vehicle ran the boy over, then fled the scene.

The boy died a short time later.

The vehicle is described as large and dark, possibly a mini-van, and police say it likely has damage to its front end and a broken windshield.

Police chase ends in violent crash in Newark

  John Antalek, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are searching for a driver who led officers on a high speed chase that ended with a violent crash.

It happened in Newark Friday evening.

Police say the driver crashed into another vehicle that had a mother and her 7-year-old son inside.

The boy was thrown from the vehicle but survived.

The suspect escaped on foot.
