Search for missing boater in waters off Sayreville
Eyewitness NewsSAYREVILLE (WABC) -- Rescuers continue to search for for a missing boater in New Jersey Tuesday. Authorities say the man vanished in the waters off Sayreville at about 8 p.m. Monday.
Two men were out fishing near Morgan Marina when their boat lost its motor. One of them jumped to find it, but he never resurfaced.
Divers worked through they night to try and find the man, but were unsuccessful.Police are expected to release more information, and possibly the man's identity, on Tuesday.

1 found dead; Search continues for other missing swimmer
Eyewitness NewsPERTH AMBOY, N.J. (WABC) -- The summer scorcher is sending thousands of people seeking relief from the blistering heat to the Jersey shore. But with the cool water, the heat and humidity are creating dangerous rip currents. The search for two missing swimmers resumed Thursday, one day after dozens of people had to be rescued. The body of a 23-year-old Irvington man who went missing off the beaches of Asbury Park was recovered Thursday morning, but crews continued to search for an 18-year-old from Bayonne who vanished in the waters off Seaside Park around 3:30 p.m.
The Asbury Park victim had swam out to save his sister, who was pulled from the water by lifeguards. The heat led to record crowds, and all those extra swimmers kept lifeguards busy. At least 30 swimmers were rescued Wednesday.A father and son are being called heroes after they saved a little girl and her cousin from the rough currents of the Raritan Bay.
The current pulled the two children out past the pier in Perth Amboy. That's when Hector Hernandez and his son Joshua went in and rescued 9-year-old Laneija Smith and the other child.
"I saw her go down, and that's when I knew it wasn't a joke," Hector Hernandez said. "And that's when I jumped in."
Joshua swam even farther out to save the cousin.
"I seen them jumping up and down, and then I seen them go under, and then they jumped back up one more time and take a breath," he said. "So I just jumped off and went in. I guess it was just instinct. Because I have a little brother, so I would've felt terrible if something happened...I wouldn't call myself a hero. I just did what was right."
Laneija is now in the intensive care unit at St. Peter's University Hospital. Doctors expect her and her cousin to make full recoveries.
"If he didn't have enough courage and step up as a man and go in there and save my daughter, she would not be alive," dad Thomas Smith said.
Officials warn swimmers against venturing too far out. They stress that if you get sucked into a current, do not swim against it. Move with it until you can safely swim to shore.

Search called off for missing New Jersey swimmer
Eyewitness NewsLONG BRANCH (WABC) -- Search teams called off their search Tuesday for a 17-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming Sunday off Long Branch.
The loss is devastating for the family and friends of Rudy Mena, of Paterson.
The water and air search was halted Monday after approximately 14 hours, but resumed for a brief period Tuesday.
The Coast Guard says the search covered at 88 nautical square miles and involved helicopters, boats and divers. An aerial search was conducted from Asbury to Oceanic beach, and a Coast Guard boat searched from Long Branch to Monmouth Beach.Mena vanished in knee-deep water Sunday evening. A wave knocked him over, and the teen never resurfaced.

Desperate search for elderly Newark woman
Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A Newark woman is spending her Christmas searching for her elderly mother who vanished among the throngs of tourists in Times Square. They were eating at a Sbarro's on Broadway at 49th street on Saturday.
The daughter got up for a moment and when she returned, her 73-year-old mother, who suffers from dementia, was nowhere to be found.
She also never returned to the assisted-living facility where she lives in Newark.The missing woman's name is Nellie Beamon. She answers to the name Gemini.

NJ boy dead; police search for hit-and-run driver
Eyewitness NewsLAKEWOOD, N.J. (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are searching for a hit-and-run driver who killed a 12-year-old boy. It happened on South Clover Street in Lakewood at about 10:30 p.m. Friday.
Police say the vehicle ran the boy over, then fled the scene.
The boy died a short time later.The vehicle is described as large and dark, possibly a mini-van, and police say it likely has damage to its front end and a broken windshield.

Police search for baboon on the run in NJ
JACKSON (WABC) -- A wayward baboon remained on the loose in southern New Jersey on Friday afternoon, causing some concern among local residents but creating a buzz among numerous online followers who were closely following the animal's travels.
"I saw the red hiney and I knew it was a baboon - instant panic!" said eyewitness Stacey Murphy.
Murphy was in the kitchen making food for the 4th of July when she made her first sighting.
"It just walked here like it was nothing. It was on all fours. If it was standing up, how tall would it have been? My height?" she said.Murphy then screamed at the top of her lungs - so loud it woke her 12-year-old son up.
So far, there have been five sightings like this over the past two days.
All five sightings were in areas not far from Six Flags Great Adventure's Monkey Jungle in Jackson Township, leading to speculation that the baboon may have escaped from the park, which has 150 baboons. But officials there were still unsure Friday if one of their animals is missing because they are not counted daily, and crews that went looking for the baboon after the initial sightings have found no signs that an escape may have occurred.
"They have been out there looking for clues, like paw prints or tracks, but they didn't find any signs a baboon had been there," said Kristen Siebeneicher, the park's communications director.
She said the team included a veterinarian, a safari manager and security staff.The first baboon sighting came Thursday, when a driver said the animal was near Interstate 195, and later that day a woman said a baboon was sitting on her back porch in Jackson. On Friday morning, two residents in developments not far from the park reported a baboon was in their neighborhoods.
Murphy says that she just wants the baboons to be caught in time for her holiday party.
"They need to because I am having 25 people tonight and 4-0 tomorrow! They need to catch the thing!" she said.

Search for missing boater in Barnegat Bay
Eyewitness NewsBARNEGAT LIGHT, N.J. (WABC) -- Rescue crews have resumed their search for a 25-year-old man who fell off a speed boat as it traveled in Barnegat Bay this weekend.
Authorities say the man was one of four people aboard the 23-foot boat when it hit a wake in the bay's Tices Shoal section around 6 p.m. Saturday.
The man - who wasn't wearing a life jacket - and another passenger with him in the back of the boat were tossed into the water. The other passenger was soon pulled from the water by the boat's driver, but the missing man never resurfaced..

Police search for Jersey City rapist
It's the second recent attack in the same neighborhood.
Hudson County investigators are looking into a possible link between this latest attack and a similar crime in late March.
Women Eyewitness News talked to Tuesday are taking steps to protect themselves from the serial rapist."I'm really petrified," said Kimberly Conyers, a Jersey City resident.
Kimberly Conyers opens her daycare center at 6 a.m. most days, but she won't be unlocking the door alone anymore.
"I'm going to have my brother walk me because it's very scary," Conyers said.
Business owners and residents all along Bergen Avenue near Fairmount in Jersey City are nervous Tuesday, after a young woman was brutally attacked early Sunday morning at around 1:30 a.m.
She was walking home when a man grabbed her from behind and demanded money, then he dragged her to a quiet spot, and raped her.
He ran off when a neighbor came by.
"Some friend told me to buy the pepper spray but now I think I need to do it," said Maria Belliard, a Jersey City resident.
Investigators say the suspect is a black man, 25-35 years old, standing 5'7" who is in good physical shape.
He was last seen wearing a dark colored t-shirt, a red cap, maroon sweatpants and sneakers.
The description of both the suspect and the attack sound eerily similar to another rape in Jersey City back in March.
In that case, the suspect was on a bike on Harrison Avenue near Bergen Avenue at around 1 a.m. when he put his victim in a chokehold, dragged her into an alley, and raped her.
Monique Smith Andrews owns a salon nearby.
"I instantly thought of my clients because when they leave late at night they will need someone to walk them to their cars because you never know," Smith Andrews said.
There were surveillance cameras in the area of the most recent attack, and police are hoping to release an image soon to ask for the public's help in finding this attacker.

Search resumes at NJ lake for missing Calif. man
Eyewitness NewsEAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WABC) -- Search crews have returned to a central New Jersey lake to look for a California man who went missing while fishing from a canoe. Authorities say the 30-year-old man, whose name and hometown were not immediately disclosed, was in the area to visit a cousin.
He had taken the canoe out on Farrington Lake around noon Saturday and was last seen in an area between Route 18 and Ryders Lane in East Brunswick.
After the man failed to return by dusk, his cousin called authorities around 7:30 p.m. Several police officers, firefighters and divers soon began searching the waterway and surrounding area, and they eventually found the 16-foot canoe but not its oars.. The search was suspended just after midnight, then resumed around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.
