Woman arrested, accused of faking cancer

  Matt Kozar, Eyewitness NewsDELRAN, N.J. (WABC) -- A woman in New Jersey is charged with faking cancer, and collecting thousands of dollars in donations for her "treatment."

Authorities say 40-year-old Lori Stilley from Delran, New Jersey played the part of a sick cancer patient and had everyone fooled, even her sister.

"She was good. She convinced a lot of people that she was sick," said Lisa DiGiovanni, Stilley's sister.

Lisa DiGiovanni says she was heartbroken when she heard the news.

So, she did what she could to help including fundraisers, T-shirt sales and raffles.

She even helped plan and pay for a wedding between her sister and her boyfriend to grant her dying wish.

"I just felt like I was doing something even though I couldn't help fix her. I tried to be there as much as I could," DiGiovanni said.

DiGiovanni says things just didn't add up.

Like when her sister was preparing for hospice care, but all of the sudden started feel better and canceled the care.

"She came to my daughter's playoff field hockey game and it was very dramatic, in a wheelchair and she was supposed to go in hospice the next day and I was staring at her saying, she doesn't look sick," DiGiovanni said.

She told her friends and family members she had stage three bladder cancer.

Investigators say Stilley even published an e-book about her struggle with the disease.

Woman found in burning New Jersey home was murdered

  Eyewitness NewsEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The death of an elderly woman whose body was found inside her burning northern New Jersey home this week has been ruled a homicide.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says 70-year-old Barbara Vernieri was found shortly after police and firefighters arrived at her East Rutherford home around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

A cause of death was not immediately known, and Molinelli did not disclose further details. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

An East Rutherford official tells The Record (http://bit.ly/UczEF9) that a sliding screen door at the two-family home had been slashed and that Vernieri may have been stabbed.

The official also told the newspaper that the fire had been set in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.

New Jersey remains identified as missing woman

  Eyewitness NewsBOGATA -- DNA analysis has confirmed remains that washed up on a New York beach a decade ago are those of a New Jersey housewife who disappeared in 2001.

However, the break in the case doesn't shed any light on how Patricia Viola died.

The 42-year-old disappeared without a trace from her Bogota home on Feb. 13, 2001.

Her remains were found on a beach in Rockaway, Queens in July 2002.

Her husband, James, tells The Record newspaper he was stunned when police on Tuesday told him about the DNA match.

He says he thought his wife was out shopping the day she disappeared and he called police at 11:30 p.m. to report her missing.

He believes the match came from new DNA samples that their children submitted last year.

Jersey City woman abducted, body found in Newark

NEWARK (WABC) -- Regina Baker was a single mother of five who lived in a brick apartment building on Bidwell Avenue in Jersey City. That is, until late Saturday night, when police say she was violently abducted from the building and ended up dead.

The 27-year-old's body was found in Newark late Monday in the 400 block of South 15th Street behind a vacant townhouse two days after she was taken from her home.

"Tragic, it's devastating, she has five children," friend Kamisha Gordon said. "My heart bleeds for her children. No one is going to care for them as their mother did. It's awful."

Police say Baker was taken at gunpoint and was put in the trunk of a black car, according to people who live in the area.

Numerous sources tell Eyewitness News that the building's surveillance cameras recorded the violent kidnapping. Investigators also say that there were several witnesses.

Still, Baker's abduction wasn't reported to police until Sunday afternoon, a full 16 hours after her killers snatched her.

Tuesday night on Bidwell Avenue, a woman who didn't want to be identified offered several possible motives for the murder.

"She was in to gangbanging, she started a lot of confusion," the woman said. "She witnessed a murder in Newark and it caught up with her, too many stories."

Police have been interviewing individuals they call "persons of interest." So far there have been no arrests.

Woman, 92, murdered for loose change, officials say

ELIZABETH (WABC) -- The suspect is held in the Union County jail held on more than a million dollars bail and charged with a heinous murder that even hardened investigators cannot believe.

"A defenseless woman, who was in her home minding her own business, was strangled by Daniel Rios," Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said.

That 38-year old suspect is accused of pushing his way into a home, where he came face to face with 92-year old Annette Hemple.

"She attempted to scream. He put his hand on her face and pushed her a distance into the living room, onto the floor and he strangled her," Romankow said.

Investigators said he went through the apartment collecting cups of coins. In all, he found just 360 dollars in loose change, which he cashed in at a local supermarket.

"He acknowledged he did this. That he killed this lady," romankow said.

A week before the murder, Rios was spotted by residents in a nearby block, allegedly breaking into another house. He was followed and reported to police, who later issue a warrant for his arrest.

He was found in Newark, police say, and revealed his disturbing pattern.

"Most of the time he would walk from home to home, ring the door bell. If the occupants didn't answer he would break into the home," Elizabeth Det. Tom Kuczer said.

It is not immediately clear if he has a lawyer. He was arrested last week and is being held on $1.5 million bail.

Officials said Hemple was last seen alive on May 24, and discovered dead a few hours later, by a family member who lived on the second-floor of Hemple's two-family home.

91-year-old woman found murdered in home

  Eyewitness NewsELIZABETH (WABC) -- Police in Elizabeth, New Jersey are trying to solve the murder of a 91-year-old woman inside her home.

The killing happened on Thursday in what authorities believe was a robbery attempt.

Annette Hempel lived on the first floor of a two family home at 673 Jefferson Avenue in Elizabeth.

She was last seen alive by a family member who lives on the second floor around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. When the family member returned a few hours later they found Hempel on the floor of the living room unresponsive, said prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:21p.m.

The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, but how she was killed has not been released.

A nearly life-long resident of the city Hempel was known in the neighborhood as a kind woman.

"Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home," said Romankow. "This is nothing but a senseless and brutal act against a defnelsess woman. As with all homicides we will use every available resource to make sure the killer is captured."

Union County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or people responsible for the homicide of Ms. Hempel. Anonymous calls may be placed to 908-654-TIPS or via the Internet at http://www.uctip.org/.

Muslim woman told to remove niqab in mall

ELIZABETH (WABC) -- Wakeelah Salaam had been shopping by herself for less than ten minutes at the Bridegwater Commons Mall when a security guard approached her and told her to remove her traditional Muslim face covering.

"He said, 'ma'am, I'm telling you, you cannot wear that mask in here. He came as close to me as though he was going to kiss me, and then he made the hand gesture like he was going to lift it up for me," Salaam said.

Salaam was born in the United States, and was raised Muslim. She has always worn a long dress, or hijab, and a headscarf. But when she was in her mid-20s, she decided to start wearing the niqab, or face covering, that shows only her eyes when she's in public.

She's worn the niqab in court, and even to visit a relative in prison, so Salaam says she was shocked when she was approached twice by the same mall security guard Saturday. She eventually felt so uncomfortable that she called police.

"I felt threatened, like I couldn't walk and shop in the mall without this man asking me to take off my niqab," Salaam added.

After speaking with police, Salaam decided to leave Bridgewater Commons, which she had visited before with no problems. After Eyewitness News got involved, an executive with the company that runs Bridgewater Commons' security called Salaam to say he's sorry.

"We sincerely apologize", said Donald Lantz, "Our security guard has received additional training in cultural diversity. We respect her right to dress according to her religious beliefs and she is welcome in our mall anytime."

Salaam says she appreciates the apology, but next time she needs to go shopping, she will probably choose another mall.

Woman killed in wrong-way tractor-trailer crash

  Eyewitness NewsNEWARK -- Police are investigating a crash on Routes 1 and 9 in Newark that claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman early Friday.

Authorities say it appears Jaynna Colon of Lyndhurst was driving the wrong way on the Wilson Street ramp entering the highway when her vehicle struck a tractor-trailer head on.

Authorities say a 21-year-old female passenger in her car and the truck driver are in stable condition.

Woman accused of running Ponzi scheme

  Eyewitness NewsHACKENSACK -- Authorities say a New Jersey woman operated a Ponzi scheme over a six-year period by telling people they could invest in a hedge fund operated by financier George Soros.

Soros never heard of Dunya Predovan or the hedge fund.

Bergen County's prosecutor says the 58-year-old collected approximately $450,000 and investors never received any money.

The Manahawkin resident is held on $100,000 bail, charged with theft by deception and issuing bad checks.

Woman claims movers asked for sexual favors

MORRISTOWN, New Jersey (WABC) -- A moving mess as a moving company is under investigation for giving low estimates, holding peoples belongings hostage and even asking for sexual favors in exchange for a lower price.

"Do you feel like you were an easy target for them... Yes definitely," One suspected victim answers.

Hiliary isn't using her last name because she is still shaken.

Last year she was moving from Summit to Morristown. She had a new job and needed a moving company and like so many these days, she found one on the internet, Progessive Movers.

She got a quote of $210 in writing.

Once at her new place, she says the movers stayed in the truck for 45 minutes.

"So they come out provide me the paperwork and tell me that I owe them 1100 dollars in cash," she said.

$600 added on to walk up three stairs and an inflated travel time.

When she protested, one of the three male movers said "So the only way we will give you the $210 is if you sleep with me and the foreman".

Stunned, disgusted and scared she says he continued.

"He's like so you gonna take us up on our offer? I said no here is your cash now get out of here," she adds.

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs says they've heard this before. "It's not the first time we've seen it but this is one of the worst we've seen," said Eric Kanefsky.

Kanefsky says Progressive Movers has almost 90 complaints against them. Mostly for the bait and switch tactic, so he took them to court to shut them down.

The moving company couldn't be found anywhere.

A call to the company's attorney went unreturned

Back at Hiliary's new home, she estimates she lost $300-$400,000 worth of stuff in the move. Some of it broken, much of it never delivered.

A year later, and a little wiser she offers this advice learn from her.

"Even if it's a simple Google search you can find a lot of information on companies out there which I unfortunately discovered retrospectively instead of proactively before my move," she said.

Woman charged with drunk driving after crash

  Eyewitness NewsCLIFFSIDE PARK (WABC) -- A New Jersey woman is facing charges of driving drunk and crashing her car.

The accident happened just after noon last month on Palisade Avenue in Cliffside Park.

Police arrested 50-year-old Janina Wojnarowska, of Passaic, after they say she slammed into the back of another car, injuring two people in that vehicle and a passenger in her own car.

Officers say they found a bottle of liquor in her purse.

Madison woman attacked by fox

MADISON (WABC) -- Caroline Malia knows how lucky she is. The attack only lasted a few minutes, but it was terrifying and painful for the 23-year-old babysitter.

This morning she showed up for work at this home on Longview Avenue and she realized it wasn't a cat grabbing on to her leg - it was a fox.

"By the time I realized it was a fox, it had already bit my sweatpants," Malia said.

She says she struggled to get away from the fox, and it had locked on and wasn't letting go.

"Then we kind of stumbled down here, and then we wrestled in the grass and I screamed and yelled," Malia added.

While she was screaming, Malia's neighbor John Hamilton came to her rescue.

"I grabbed it by the neck and just pulled it off my hand and flung it into the car," Hamilton said.

The cops eventually shot and killed the animal, and now have a warning for other Madison residents.

"Usually these animals are weary of humans, so if they approach, keep your distance and do so calmly," warned Lt. Darren Dachisen of the Madison Police Department.

Police don't know what caused the fox to attack, but it is being tested for rabies.

Meanwhile, John Hamilton and Caroline Malia are relieved that the attack wasn't more serious, and that the neighborhood the kids weren't out playing.

Woman struck, killed by NJ Transit bus

  Eyewitness NewsIRVINGTON (WABC) -- A New Jersey Transit bus struck and killed a woman in Irvington on Monday morning.

Josefa Cisallina, 45, of Orange was struck at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and New Street in Irvington around 6:00 a.m. The bus was traveling eastbound at the time, officials said.

The victim was transported to University Hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead at 8:46 am.

No charges have been filed against anyone in connection with the collision.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and Irvington Police are investigating.

Woman saved from being sex slave by Facebook

  Andy Field, Eyewitness NewsHACKENSACK, N.J. (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey say a woman was forced into prostitution and used Facebook to get rescued.

Police say the 30-year-old woman sent a message to her brother in Florida saying she was being held against her will.

New Jersey Police think 29-year-old Trenace McCarroll bailed out a woman from jail and then essentially kidnapped her and worked her as a prostitute to pay off the bail money.

He thought the woman had no cell service but she did have an iPhone that got a Wi-Fi signal.

She used it to put out a call for help on Facebook to her family, who called Hackensack Police, who then went to McCarroll's apartment but didn't find him.

He called back, turned himself into the police station with the woman in the car.

The police chief says she might still be a sex slave if it wasn't for her iPhone and Facebook.

"It had no service, so I think that he was under the impression that she couldn't do anything with it, but as we all know, these new phones you have Wi-Fi access and there's a lot of Wi-Fi spots," said Captain Tomas Padilla, Hackensack Police Department.

Desperate search for elderly Newark woman

  Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- A Newark woman is spending her Christmas searching for her elderly mother who vanished among the throngs of tourists in Times Square.

They were eating at a Sbarro's on Broadway at 49th street on Saturday.

The daughter got up for a moment and when she returned, her 73-year-old mother, who suffers from dementia, was nowhere to be found.

She also never returned to the assisted-living facility where she lives in Newark.

The missing woman's name is Nellie Beamon. She answers to the name Gemini.

Woman pleads not guilty in penis injection death

Web produced by Jennifer Matarse, Eyewitness NewsEAST ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A New Jersey woman moonlighting as a cosmetic surgeon pleaded not guilty to fatally injecting a 22-year-old man's penis with silicone.

The father of two died in May, just one day after undergoing the procedure.

Kasia Rivera appeared here in Essex County court Tuesday to face manslaughter charges.

The parents of her alleged victim were there too, trying to warn others about the danger of underground cosmetic procedures like the one that killed their son.

900 "We need to do something to stop this, my son died of this," said China Street, the victim's mother.

China Street's eyes brimmed with tears as she remembered her son Justin.

Justin, a father of two young boys, died in May of a silicone embolism.

The fatal clot in his lungs happened less than two days after he received an illegal silicone injection in his penis.

"He was 22, people can mock him, but this woman and others need to be stopped," Street said.

34-year old Kasia Rivera appeared in court Tuesday to face charges of manslaughter and practicing medicine without a license.

She had no medical training, but she appears to have been trying to teach herself using these books that we found outside the apartment she was just evicted from.

Investigators believe Rivera gave Sweet the injection at her apartment in East Orange.

Police believe she may have seen other people there too because she was advertising in local bars.

Rivera's business cards said she could "enhance your beauty", leading investigators to believe she was promising not just to make men's genitals bigger, but to enhance women's lips, breasts and buttocks as well.

"A lot of times people are embarrassed to talk about this, but we are not looking to humiliate people but we need to know about this because there's a health risk," said William Niafsay, the Essex Co. Assistant Prosecutor.

Justin Sweet's heartbroken parents are hoping that going public with the story of his untimely death will stop others from seeking out illegal silicone injections.

"I don't want another parent to go through what we're going through, so we want other people to come forward to put a stop to it," said Kysung Mills, the victim's father.

These underground silicone injections have grown popular as a cheap alternative to plastic surgery.

Experts warn they are very dangerous and they say if you've had them and you experience fever or shortness of breath, you should see a doctor immediately.

Newark woman struck by stray bullet in van

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- Police in Newark are investigating after a stray bullet hit a woman driving a van full of students on Woodside Avenue Monday.

The bullet pierced the driver's side door of the red van.

Inside, was an innocent 59-year-old school bus driver with six high school students.

Three girls ran screaming for help, the three boys were terrified, but stayed to look after her.

"Wrong place, wrong time," Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio says it happened around 5 p.m. Monday on Woodside Avenue.

"Some kind of dispute led to a shot being fired, didn't hit intended target, went astray and hit driver of school bus in her hip," DeMaio said, "Innocent person being hit, that's something we're not going to tolerate."

The van was bringing the students back to high school after a day of work.

Christ the King Prep School is an experimental academy that places kids in jobs one day per week.

Last year 100% of its graduates went on to college.

Parents picking up their children Tuesday were horrified by the random violence.

"Just moved to the area, and I am scared about that," one parent said.

"This is like the Wild Wild West out here, these kids don't care, they just run wild," another parent said.

The police director tells Eyewitness News he's concerned about what's happening with guns.

"You look back at the kinds of weapons we used to see out here, 38s and Saturday night specials, now we routinely see the kind of weaponry, assault rifles, that they are using in Iraq are right here on our streets," DeMaio said.

"It's sad. Just crazy out here," a resident said.

Elderly woman found stabbed to death in home

  Eyewitness NewsIRVINGTON (WABC) -- An elderly woman was found fatally stabbed in her well-kept home in New Jersey overnight Thursday.

The victim, 88-year-old Casetta Blunt, was found inside her Campfield Street home in Irvington.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Blunt, a longtime resident, lived alone in the home.

"I can't imagine somebody wanting to hurt her. I can't imagine such a nice lady, such a sweet lady," neighbor Jennifer Ogbur said.

Blunt was always working in her yard, always with a smile on her face.

She was that one person who everyone knew and loved. She was a treasured part of this neighborhood.

At this time no one has been charged, but detectives are talkiing to a person of interest.

"We wish to reassure the public that we believe at this time this was a targeted incident," said Acting Essex County Prosecutor Murray.

Arrest made in NJ elderly woman stabbing murder

  Eyewitness NewsIRVINGTON (WABC) -- A woman who used to do chores for an elderly woman in New Jersey is now under arrest and charged with her murder.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray announced Friday that 45-year-old Yvonne Walker has been arrested in the fatal stabbing of 88-year-old Casetta Blunt, who stabbed multiples times in her home on Campfield Street in Irvington.

"The brutal and senseless death of an 88-year-old woman who was best known in the community for tending her garden and being kind to people is an unspeakable tragedy," Murray said. "We are pleased we were able to apprehend the suspect quickly."

At approximately 12:25 a.m. Thursday, Irvington police responded to the home after receiving a report of an elderly woman found unconscious. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy completed Thursday indicated she died from multiple stab wounds.

Walker is charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of+ a weapon for a lawful purpose. Bail was set at $1 million.

Woman attacked on Point Pleasant beach

POINT PLEASANT (WABC) -- Investigators in Ocean County are hunting for a sexual predator who attacked a 21-year-old woman on the beach.

The assault happened at 3:00 in the morning on the beach at Point Pleasant, after the woman left friends. She possibly met her attacker earlier that night.

Images of a person of interest were captured on a surveillance camera along the boardwalk at Point Pleasant Beach.

Authorities are hoping someone will make out the images enough to identify him.

The attack happened along a stretch of beach between the jetties and Martell's restaurant, where the woman had been out with friends earlier Sunday evening.

"Police got a call from an establishment that a patron was sexually assaulted at 3:00 a.m.," Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch said.

"People assume it's safe because it's the Jersey shore, and they see families, but it can happen anywhere," Malboro resident Melissa Brenman said.

"Surprised it happened here, but not surprised it happened with the world we live in," Jessica Rooney, a Point Pleasant resident, said.

The victim was treated at a hospital.

Police closed off that section of the beach for several hours Monday, successfully gathering some evidence.

Again, this man is being called a person of interest only by the prosecutor. He is in his mid to late 20s, 5'8 to 5' 10, 180 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt, khaki shorts, and has dark hair, dark eyes, a deep tan and a heavy foreign accent.

"We're not making accusations. We would just like to talk to him because we think he may have vital information on this incident," Lynch said.
