(WABC) -- After Eyewitness News' story aired Friday about Tania Parker and little Pearly, her 4 pound Maltese that went missing an hour and a half after being dropped off at Bow Wow Care in Union City; we got a call from Marla Cooley.

"I said oh my goodness it's the same place!" Bykes-Cooley said.

Immediately she saw Bow Wow's owner Adrian Gonzalez and made the connection.

That's where she took her Maltese Winnie back in July.

When they picked Winnie up there was a big problem.

"I said, 'Oh my God' what happened to her belly? Why didn't you call me?' He said, 'I thought I'd take care of it,'" Bykes-Cooley said.

Winnie's belly is nice and pink now, but the day Marla picked her up it was red and bruised and she had scratches on her legs as well.

After hearing that story Eyewitness News had to come back and talk to Bow Wow's owner, but when we got there it was closed with only a number to call.

So Eyewitness News called it.

Gonzalez answered.

He said the shop is closed because he is taking care of his mother who is ill.

He says Pearly still hasn't been found and Marla's story is nonsense.

He says Winnie just got a rash.

But Bykes-Cooley had a vet bill for $500.

"The vet was outraged said absolutely not this was not a rash. Something happened with this dog, this dog has been bruised," Bykes-Cooley said.

Gonzalez says he runs a good, fair business and he denies the claim.

Now remember, Tania is still waiting to find out what happened to her dog.

Friday she was devastated.

"She could get hit by a car, she don't know how to like eat in the streets, she's never been out there," Parker said.

Marla says she just doesn't want any other dogs to get hurt or go missing.

"He took no ownership and if you can't do that when you are taking care of dogs, then you don't need to be in business," Bykes-Cooley said.

Missing New Jersey girl, 10, found at friend's house

  Eyewitness NewsLONG BRANCH (WABC) -- Police looking for a girl who disappeared after leaving school near the New Jersey shore found her at a friend's house Thursday morning.

State Police say 10-year-old Lizbeth Vasquez was last seen leaving the Anastasia School in Long Branch on Wednesday afternoon.

She reportedly spent the night at the friend's house.

Dog goes missing at grooming shop

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsUNION CITY, N.J. (WABC) -- A woman in New Jersey is desperate to find her missing dog.

She dropped off her beloved Maltese at the pet groomer earlier this week and hasn't seen her since.

"She's just in the streets. She could get hit by a car. She doesn't know how to eat in the streets. She's never been out there," said Tania Parker, dog owner.

Tania Parker is beside herself.

The thought of little four pound Pearly wandering the streets, or worse, is just too much to take.

"She can't make it out there. She doesn't even know what the streets are. She's only been out there for her daily walks," Parker said.

Tania dropped the $2,000 Maltese tea cup off at Bow Wow Care in Union City on Tuesday at noon.

An hour and a half later there was no sign of Pearly.

"They called and said we have bad news, your dog is missing," Parker said.

Tania panicked and rushed back to the store.

Pearly was gone and owner Adrian Gonzalez couldn't tell her how.

"What can you tell them? You know I feel bad about this whole situation, you know I'm really sorry about it you know?" said Adrian Gonzalez, Bow Wow Care.

On Tuesday it was humid. Gonzalez says he opened the door to get the dogs some air. He put up a gate so you can see there were two gates. He thinks someone jumped over and stole Pearly, because she couldn't have gotten out under there.

"Now I dropped off three dogs that day. My dog, my cousin's dog, and my brother in laws dog. The most valuable dog is the one that's missing," Parker said.

She thinks Pearly might have even been hurt by another dog at Bow Wow, and they are covering it up.

Gonzalez has put up these missing posters and is offering a reward of a couple hundred dollars and even says he will buy Tania another dog.

But holding onto little Pearly's outfits, Tania says none of that matters to her and her 2-year-old son.

They miss their dog and they worry too because Pearly is diabetic and needs her medication.

"I don't want another dog, I want my dog," Parker said.

But with each passing day, Tania knows that is less likely.

A dog who fits into a tiny dress cannot survive on her own.

New Jersey remains identified as missing woman

  Eyewitness NewsBOGATA -- DNA analysis has confirmed remains that washed up on a New York beach a decade ago are those of a New Jersey housewife who disappeared in 2001.

However, the break in the case doesn't shed any light on how Patricia Viola died.

The 42-year-old disappeared without a trace from her Bogota home on Feb. 13, 2001.

Her remains were found on a beach in Rockaway, Queens in July 2002.

Her husband, James, tells The Record newspaper he was stunned when police on Tuesday told him about the DNA match.

He says he thought his wife was out shopping the day she disappeared and he called police at 11:30 p.m. to report her missing.

He believes the match came from new DNA samples that their children submitted last year.

Missing Irvington siblings found safe

  Eyewitness NewsIRVINGTON (WABC) -- Police have found two siblings, a 7-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister, who went missing Tuesday.

The children had last been seen at their school, Thurgood Marshall School on Montgomery Avenue in Irvington, Tuesday afternoon.

They were identified as Rajae and Rajanique Covington-King.

Police believe there was initially a miscommunication between the school and the children's family.

Their aunt reported them missing just before 11 p.m.

The children live on Clinton Avenue.

No charges have been filed.

Search for missing boater in waters off Sayreville

  Eyewitness NewsSAYREVILLE (WABC) -- Rescuers continue to search for for a missing boater in New Jersey Tuesday.

Authorities say the man vanished in the waters off Sayreville at about 8 p.m. Monday.

Two men were out fishing near Morgan Marina when their boat lost its motor. One of them jumped to find it, but he never resurfaced.

Divers worked through they night to try and find the man, but were unsuccessful.

Police are expected to release more information, and possibly the man's identity, on Tuesday.

Missing boy found in South Carolina

Authorities in West Windsor, Mercer County are asking for help locating a missing five year old boy who may have been abducted by his grandfather. David Lundy, 5, of West Windsor, New Jersey and his grandfather, Morris "Tommy" Lundy, age 50, of New York.

  Eyewitness NewsWEST WINDSOR (WABC) -- Authorities in South Carolina have located a missing 5-year-old New Jersey boy apparently abducted by his grandfather, who was arrested.

David Lundy of West Windsor was found at a fast food restaurant in South Carolina by local authorities.

It is believed Lundy was taken by his grandfather, 50-year-old Morris "Tommy" Lundy of New York, last Friday.

The State Police thought they might be headed to Brooklyn and searched several locations, but instead they went south. The grandfather has a lot of ties to South Carolina, officials said.

He will be brought back to New Jersey and charged by the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.

David Lundy, who suffers from a chronic illness, was not harmed, authorities said.

Remains found in bag in New Jersey ID'd as missing teen

  Eyewitness NewsPARSIPPANY -- Authorities used dental records to identify human remains that were found off the side of a northern New Jersey road.

The Morris County Prosecutor's Office says 14-year-old Greta Tim was reported missing by her mother in August 2008.

The Irvington resident's remains were found in a bag by landscapers in Parsippany in April 2012.

Authorities say a forensic anthropologist helped officials narrow down their search of missing person files.

Authorities say the events surrounding the teen's death remain under investigation and detectives continue to pursue many leads.

1 found dead; Search continues for other missing swimmer

  Eyewitness NewsPERTH AMBOY, N.J. (WABC) -- The summer scorcher is sending thousands of people seeking relief from the blistering heat to the Jersey shore. But with the cool water, the heat and humidity are creating dangerous rip currents.

The search for two missing swimmers resumed Thursday, one day after dozens of people had to be rescued. The body of a 23-year-old Irvington man who went missing off the beaches of Asbury Park was recovered Thursday morning, but crews continued to search for an 18-year-old from Bayonne who vanished in the waters off Seaside Park around 3:30 p.m.

The Asbury Park victim had swam out to save his sister, who was pulled from the water by lifeguards. The heat led to record crowds, and all those extra swimmers kept lifeguards busy. At least 30 swimmers were rescued Wednesday.

A father and son are being called heroes after they saved a little girl and her cousin from the rough currents of the Raritan Bay.

The current pulled the two children out past the pier in Perth Amboy. That's when Hector Hernandez and his son Joshua went in and rescued 9-year-old Laneija Smith and the other child.

"I saw her go down, and that's when I knew it wasn't a joke," Hector Hernandez said. "And that's when I jumped in."

Joshua swam even farther out to save the cousin.

"I seen them jumping up and down, and then I seen them go under, and then they jumped back up one more time and take a breath," he said. "So I just jumped off and went in. I guess it was just instinct. Because I have a little brother, so I would've felt terrible if something happened...I wouldn't call myself a hero. I just did what was right."

Laneija is now in the intensive care unit at St. Peter's University Hospital. Doctors expect her and her cousin to make full recoveries.

"If he didn't have enough courage and step up as a man and go in there and save my daughter, she would not be alive," dad Thomas Smith said.

Officials warn swimmers against venturing too far out. They stress that if you get sucked into a current, do not swim against it. Move with it until you can safely swim to shore.

Police: Missing Drexel student found dead

  Eyewitness NewsPHILADELPHIA -- Police in Philadelphia say the body of a missing Drexel University student has been found in the Schuylkill River.

Relatives said 18-year-old freshman Stevens Glemaud of West Orange, New Jersey had been missing for more than two days.

They say he disappeared from campus just hours before they came to help him move back home for the summer.

Drexel officials say Glemaud was last seen leaving his west Philadelphia dorm early Saturday. Police said there were no signs of foul play.

A police spokeswoman said Monday night that a body recovered from the river that afternoon near the Philadelphia Museum of Art had been identified as that of Glemaud. She said the death is being treated as a drowning.

Drexel is a private university in Philadelphia serving about 23,500 students.

Search called off for missing New Jersey swimmer

  Eyewitness NewsLONG BRANCH (WABC) -- Search teams called off their search Tuesday for a 17-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming Sunday off Long Branch.

The loss is devastating for the family and friends of Rudy Mena, of Paterson.

The water and air search was halted Monday after approximately 14 hours, but resumed for a brief period Tuesday.

The Coast Guard says the search covered at 88 nautical square miles and involved helicopters, boats and divers. An aerial search was conducted from Asbury to Oceanic beach, and a Coast Guard boat searched from Long Branch to Monmouth Beach.

Mena vanished in knee-deep water Sunday evening. A wave knocked him over, and the teen never resurfaced.

Missing NJ woman's body found; Husband charged

  Eyewitness NewsABERDEEN -- Monmouth County prosecutors say the body of a missing mother of two small boys has been found buried off the Garden State Parkway, and they've charged her estranged husband with murder.

Bail for 31-year-old Oscar Prior-Ramirez of Eatontown was set at $1.5 million. He's been hospitalized for undisclosed reasons since 26-year-old Viridiana Beltran Gomez went missing last month, and it's not clear if he's retained a lawyer.

Beltran-Gomez's body was found late Saturday afternoon, buried about 100 feet off the roadway near milemarker 119 in Aberdeen.

County prosecutor Peter Warshaw says investigators believe Beltran-Gomez died May 13, the day after she was last seen leaving her job at a Red Bank restaurant, but it's not clear how she was killed.

An autopsy was planned for Sunday.

Search for missing boater in Barnegat Bay

  Eyewitness NewsBARNEGAT LIGHT, N.J. (WABC) -- Rescue crews have resumed their search for a 25-year-old man who fell off a speed boat as it traveled in Barnegat Bay this weekend.

Authorities say the man was one of four people aboard the 23-foot boat when it hit a wake in the bay's Tices Shoal section around 6 p.m. Saturday.

The man - who wasn't wearing a life jacket - and another passenger with him in the back of the boat were tossed into the water. The other passenger was soon pulled from the water by the boat's driver, but the missing man never resurfaced..

Crews from the Coast Guard, state police and other agencies immediately began looking for the man, but later suspended their search due to darkness. They then resumed it shortly after dawn on Sunday. (Copyright ©2011 WABC-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.)

Coast Guard: Missing NJ boat case is possible hoax

  By JOSH LEDERMANSANDY HOOK, N.J. -- The U.S. Coast Guard launched an investigation Tuesday into a possible hoax after a 10-hour search turned up no sign of four boaters who sent distress calls saying they were abandoning ship.

Boats, planes and helicopters were dispatched before sunrise in a rescue operation that joined together military, state and local agencies and cost the Coast Guard almost $88,000. The rescue was called off in the afternoon after a search of a 600-square-mile area failed to turn up a boat, debris or the sailors.

Authorities are searching for whoever made two false distress calls - a federal felony - and are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to arrest and prosecution.

The first call came in shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday on an emergency radio channel. Claiming to be aboard a 33-foot white sailboat named Courtney Lynn, the callers said their vessel was taking on water. Less than an hour later, those aboard radioed that the boat was 90 percent submerged, and that they were transferring to a small gray dinghy.

No further transmissions were received from the callers, who said they didn't have a hand-held radio or flares to communicate with rescuers from the dinghy. The Coast Guard did not have information about boat registration or owners.

A Coast Guard boat searched for five hours, while local police agencies searched from land. A Coast Guard airplane was dispatched from Massachusetts and flew three rescue flights over the search area, while both the Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police searched by helicopter.

"The weather conditions were ideal for finding a 33-foot vessel, even if it were sinking," said Chief Warrant Officer Troy Loining, who commands the Coast Guard's Sandy Hook Station.

The initial distress call placed the boat to the east of a naval station and a few miles from Sandy Hook Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean between New York City and northeastern New Jersey.

The crew later corrected their position to say they were west of the naval station. Coast Guard direction-finding equipment was used to determine the signal likely came from a few miles away near Highlands, N.J., south of Sandy Hook.

With all search options exhausted and no evidence of anyone in distress, the rescue was suspended around 1:40 p.m. and an investigation launched. Making false distress calls is a felony that can result in up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines, according to the Coast Guard.

"False distress calls waste taxpayer dollars, put Coast Guard and other first responders at unnecessary risk and can interfere with the Coast Guard's ability to respond to those in actual distress at sea," said Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe.

Officials urged anyone with information to contact the Coast Guard anonymously at 646-872-5774.

Sandy Hook Station has responded to calls in the past that have turned out to be hoaxes, Loining said, but other distress calls have turned into legitimate rescues. In May 2010, the Coast Guard rescued two people by helicopter from a capsizing boat near Sandy Hook.

Body identified as missing swimmer from New Jersey

  Eyewitness NewsBRADLEY BEACH -- Authorities have identified a body as the New Jersey teenager who disappeared last week after getting caught in a rip current.

Bradley Beach Police Chief Leonard Guida said a family friend identified the body as Naisere Nelson. An official identification is pending an autopsy on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old's body was seen floating beneath the Ocean Avenue Bridge in Avon before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Search resumes at NJ lake for missing Calif. man

  Eyewitness NewsEAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WABC) -- Search crews have returned to a central New Jersey lake to look for a California man who went missing while fishing from a canoe.

Authorities say the 30-year-old man, whose name and hometown were not immediately disclosed, was in the area to visit a cousin.

He had taken the canoe out on Farrington Lake around noon Saturday and was last seen in an area between Route 18 and Ryders Lane in East Brunswick.

After the man failed to return by dusk, his cousin called authorities around 7:30 p.m. Several police officers, firefighters and divers soon began searching the waterway and surrounding area, and they eventually found the 16-foot canoe but not its oars.

. The search was suspended just after midnight, then resumed around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Prosecutor: Missing teen found in NJ pond drowned

  Eyewitness NewsBURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A prosecutor says a missing New Jersey teenager whose body was found in a pond died of drowning.

Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said Friday night that there were no signs of trauma to 18-year-old Sarah Townsend's body and no indication that foul play contributed to her death.

He says a final autopsy is awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which will take several weeks.

Townsend was last seen Monday morning when she left her family's home in Florence to go to school. Her body was found Friday in a pond in Burlington Township's Green Acres Park near where her car had been discovered.

Police Director Walter Corter said Wednesday that authorities were told Townsend may have wanted to harm herself. But Townsend's parents say their daughter was happy when she left home Monday.
