Prosecutor: Ravi deserves prison over webcam spying case

See it on TV? Check here. AP  by GEOFF MULVIHILLNEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- New Jersey prosecutors say a former Rutgers University student did not show remorse for using a webcam to spy on his roommate kissing another man and should be sent to prison.

Dharun Ravi was convicted in March of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and other charges.

His roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide in September 2010, days after the spying.

Last week, Ravi asked a judge to overturn the jury's verdict or for a probationary sentence.

In court filings Thursday, prosecutors disagreed with both positions. They said he was correctly found guilty and that he deserves a prison sentence, in part because he was not remorseful.

They said he need not be sentenced to the maximum 10 years, though.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 21.

Prosecutor: Deadly NJ hotel stabbings 'random attack'

AP  Eyewitness NewsFRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Investigators say a confrontation at a central New Jersey hotel that ended with a Texas man being fatally stabbed and another critically injured was a random attack.

Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano says 30-year-old Chad Everette Robertson of Shoreacres was killed early Saturday when he tried to help a 29-year-old colleague from Houston who was being attacked by several people.

Robertson - the married father of five young children, who range in age from 3 months to 12 years - was stabbed multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. The younger man, whose name has not been disclosed, was stabbed in the abdomen and underwent emergency surgery. He remained hospitalized Monday night.

Soriano says the two men came to New Jersey a few weeks and had been working on an environmental project for Robertson's Houston-based company. But authorities have not said whether the men were staying at the Franklin Township hotel where the stabbings occurred or if they had previously stayed there while in the area.

Soriano says it appears that the 29-year-old victim was confronted shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday by a group of about 12 people, but they don't believe that every member of the group took part in the attack. It also appears that Robertson saw what was happening and tried to help his younger colleague.

"Mr. Robertson was doing nothing more than coming to the aid of his friend (and) co-worker," Soriano said Monday.

Authorities are offering a $10,000 reward for information on the stabbings.

AP  Eyewitness NewsBURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A prosecutor says a missing New Jersey teenager whose body was found in a pond died of drowning.

Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said Friday night that there were no signs of trauma to 18-year-old Sarah Townsend's body and no indication that foul play contributed to her death.

He says a final autopsy is awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which will take several weeks.

Townsend was last seen Monday morning when she left her family's home in Florence to go to school. Her body was found Friday in a pond in Burlington Township's Green Acres Park near where her car had been discovered.

Police Director Walter Corter said Wednesday that authorities were told Townsend may have wanted to harm herself. But Townsend's parents say their daughter was happy when she left home Monday.
