Ex-teacher of the year accused of having sex with student

  Eyewitness NewsWEST ORANGE, N.J. -- A woman who was named Essex County's "Teacher of the Year" in 2011 is now accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male student.

County prosecutors say Erica DePalo, a 33-year-old Montclair resident who teaches English at West Orange High School, was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and child endangerment.

Her bail was set at $100,000, and it was not known Saturday if she had retained an attorney.

Prosecutors say the relationship between DePalo and the student in her honors English class started in June and ended this week.

They did not say how they learned of the alleged relationship.

Interim West Orange Schools Superintendent James O'Neill says DePalo has been suspended "indefinitely."

Police: Missing Drexel student found dead

  Eyewitness NewsPHILADELPHIA -- Police in Philadelphia say the body of a missing Drexel University student has been found in the Schuylkill River.

Relatives said 18-year-old freshman Stevens Glemaud of West Orange, New Jersey had been missing for more than two days.

They say he disappeared from campus just hours before they came to help him move back home for the summer.

Drexel officials say Glemaud was last seen leaving his west Philadelphia dorm early Saturday. Police said there were no signs of foul play.

A police spokeswoman said Monday night that a body recovered from the river that afternoon near the Philadelphia Museum of Art had been identified as that of Glemaud. She said the death is being treated as a drowning.

Drexel is a private university in Philadelphia serving about 23,500 students.

New Jersey student dies at Lafayette College

  Eyewitness NewsEASTON, Pa. -- The mother of a Lafayette College freshman who died after he was found unconscious in a residence hall says her son had been drinking heavily at a celebration for his 19th birthday.

Everett Glenn of Montclair, N.J., was pronounced dead at Easton Hospital on Saturday afternoon, the school said. Officials said police and the Northampton County coroner's office were investigating, but there was no sign of foul play.

Glenn's mother, Joanne Glenn, told The Easton Express-Times that her son had been drinking as he celebrated his 19th birthday.

"He was drinking too much and then he went to his room and he laid down," Glenn said after a prayer service on campus.

She said an emergency room doctor told her that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Friends and classmates wept and embraced at Saturday night's service, which drew about one-third of the student body of just under 2,400 students.

"Every year (on his birthday), I got to see how much of a blessing he was to us," said his father, Leonard Glenn. "I can see from the outpouring tonight he was a blessing to your community too."

Joanne Glenn said her son had earned the nickname "Mr. Mayor" for his ability to make friends.

"God has given us this gift, but He wants him back," she said. "We have to let him go."

Lafayette President Daniel Weiss offered condolences to Glenn's parents and other family members.

"My thoughts are also with our students and all members of our community who share in this tragic loss," he said.

The school said counselors would be available to help students.

Violent night at Seton Hall: 1 student shot, 1 assaulted

  Eyewitness NewsSOUTH ORANGE (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are searching for suspects after a Seton Hall student was shot and another assaulted.

The gunfire rang out in an off-campus apartment right next to police headquarters.

South Orange police are looking for a number of people, and they haven't been much more specific than that.

Officers received reports of shots fire just after 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grove Terrace Apartments. Moments later, a student showed up at the station saying he'd been shot.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that another student had been assaulted.

Both students are being treated at University Hospital in Newark for non-life threatening injuries.

Police are making it clear that the attack was not random, but no arrests have yet been made.

Female Clifton teacher accused of sex with student

  Eyewitness NewsCLIFTON (WABC) -- A high school teacher in Clifton, New Jersey, is under arrest Wedneday, accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes and Clifton Police Chief Gary Giardina said 26-year-old Kristin Leone, a history teacher at Clifton High School, was arrested Monday following an investigation.

Clifton police detectives conducted interviews, executed a search warrant and collected evidence relating to the allegations, which demonstrated that Leone engaged in sexual conduct with the boy on two separate occasions.

Leone is charged with sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal sexual contact, luring and enticing a child and official misconduct.

She was released on $100,000 bail.

Student accused of bringing a stun gun to school

TETERBORO, N.J. (WABC) -- Police say that 16 year old Bergen County Vocational Tech student brought a stun gun to school.

The Viper Tech 6.8 million volt rechargeable black stun gun with a flash light is strong enough, detectives say, to knock down a horse.

They say the student purchased the stun gun online.

Police also allegedly found a notebook filled with threats, including a "things to do in life list" that included killing a man and a police officer, bombing a school and committing suicide.

He also allegedly checked off items including stabbing a person, stealing and witnessing a murder.

Detectives are checking to see if teachers or students were on the list, but they do know the teen's parents were targeted.

NJ teacher accused of having sex with student

  Eyewitness NewsHACKENSACK -- Authorities are accusing a math teacher in Bergen County of having sex with a female student.

Joseph Greco is held on $100,000 bail, charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

County Prosecutor John Molinelli says the girl told investigators she and the 27-year-old had sex between 2010 and 2011 when she was a junior and senior at Park Ridge High School.

Greco has been suspended from the school. It's not clear whether he has an attorney.

Paramus High School student dies in class

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsPARAMUS, N.J. (WABC) -- It was a traumatic day for students at a high school in New Jersey when a fellow student collapsed in class and later died.

The 11 grader suddenly felt ill, and before he could get to the nurse's office at Paramus High School, he fell to the ground as students watched in horror.

The flag at Paramus High School flies at half staff, a grim reminder of the tragic and sudden death of one of its students as his classmates looked on in horror.

"I was just in shock," said one student.

"I couldn't believe it happened," said another student.

The three students were wrestling teammates last year of Eric Micheo, a junior at Paramus High School.

Students who were in the classroom told the three what happened.

Eric had told the teacher he wasn't feeling well and asked to go to the nurse's office.

"As the teacher was writing him a pass, he passed out and went into a seizure, he was laying there in the teachers arms and then from a seizure he went into cardiac arrest from what I heard," the student said.

Mayor Richard LaBarbiera says the death was sudden.

"Initially, the teachers in the school did everything they could in their power and were quickly joined by emergency personnel within the community and the child was transported to Hackensack Hospital," Mayor LaBarbiera said.

"Later on in the class we see a stretcher come by, see them doing CPR on him, I freaked out, like what's going on and I'm like, 'I know this kid,'" a student said.

Word spread quickly, through social media, including blogs, from a student.

"This gives everyone a lesson. Don't take life for granted. Be happy with what you have. Be grateful for people who love you. We don't know what tomorrow will bring," the blog read.

Mayor LaBarbiera is the father of a student at Paramus High School.

"Obviously, the emotion as a parent and I like every other parent, the worst always runs through your mind, and my heart goes out to the family this evening as they grieve over their tragic, sudden loss," LaBarbiera said.

N.J. student accused of making school threats on Facebook

RAMAPO, New Jersey (WABC) -- A teenager from New Jersey is under arrest and facing some serious charges after police say she posted a threatening message on Facebook.

The girl is from Wyckoff and is accused of posting a threat about her school in neighboring Franklin Lakes.

There was no visible activity from outside Ramapo High School earlier, until the principal walked out to confront us about taking pictures. They said there was no story and asked Eyewitness News to leave.

A 14-year-old student allegedly used a Facebook page to call for a terror attack on the school.

After notifying the police, the school superintendent e-mailed all parents in the school district saying, there was no perceived danger.
