New Jersey man helping alleged drunk driver struck by 2nd

Eyewitness NewsPARAMUS, N.J. -- Police say a Paramus man is in critical condition after being struck by an alleged drunk driver after pulling over to help a woman who had crashed while also allegedly driving drunk.

The Record of Woodland Park reports http://bit.ly/Rwjvzf that 21-year-old Farbod Fallah of Paramus pulled his car over at around 2:15 a.m. Friday to help a woman who police say had crashed her car into a utility pole while driving intoxicated.

Police say Fallah had pulled alongside the woman's vehicle, called 911, and left his car to assist her when both vehicles were struck by a car driven by 30-year-old Gregory Komporlis of River Edge.

Police arrested Komporlis, who they say was driving drunk. It's not clear if he has a lawyer.

Fallah remains hospitalized in Hackensack.

Hunt continues for Bayonne Bridge hit-and-run driver

Eyewitness NewsBAYONNE (WABC) -- Police are still searching for the driver who was involved in an accident on the Bayonne Bridge and then stole a car and fled the scene early Friday.

The three-car crash closed down all lanes of the span, which connects Bayonne with Staten Island, for the entire Friday morning commute. The bridge reopened around 11 a.m..

Port Authority police say the suspect was initially driving a Staten Island-bound burgundy Ford van that crossed the median on the bridge and crashed head-on into a New Jersey-bound Volkswagon Passat.

When a Good Samaritan from Staten Island stopped and got out of his black Dodge 1500 pickup to offer assistance, the driver of the Ford van stole the pickup truck and sped off.

The driver and passenger in the Volkswagon were taken by ambulance to Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A female passenger suffered lacerations to her head, while the male driver sustained lacerations to his left arm.

The suspect is described only as a man about 5-foot-6. The getaway vehicle was found abandoned on Staten Island.

No arrests have been made.

Fiery wreck on NJ Turnpike kills truck driver

Eyewitness NewsEAST WINDSOR, N.J. -- A truck driver died in a fiery crash that delayed southbound traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike for hours.

Acting State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman says the preliminary investigation shows that a box truck in the center lane crashed into the back of a UPS tractor-trailer in East Windsor at 12:26 a.m. Tuesday.

Grossman says the front of the box truck and rear of the trailer burst into flames.

Grossman says the driver of the box truck, 33-year-old Phillip Frey of Toms River, died.

The UPS driver was not injured.

Southbound turnpike traffic was diverted at Interchange 9 in East Brunswick until 6:15 a.m.

The accident investigation remains ongoing.

NJ boy dead; police search for hit-and-run driver

Eyewitness NewsLAKEWOOD, N.J. (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are searching for a hit-and-run driver who killed a 12-year-old boy.

It happened on South Clover Street in Lakewood at about 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Police say the vehicle ran the boy over, then fled the scene.

The boy died a short time later.

The vehicle is described as large and dark, possibly a mini-van, and police say it likely has damage to its front end and a broken windshield.

Driver rescued after truck overturns on NJ Turnpike

Eyewitness NewsWOODBRIDGE (WABC) -- A driver was rescued after he was trapped for nearly two hours inside an overturned truck on the New Jersey Turnpike in Woodbridge.

The southbound truck overturned just north of Interchange 11 just after 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The truck flipped off the roadway, trapping the driver.

It took emergency workers nearly two hours to free the driver from the truck's cab.

He was rushed by helicopter to a hospital.

Livery cab driver fatally shot in Newark

Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- A livery cab driver was shot and killed while driving down the road in Newark early Wednesday.

It happened on Walnut Street just before 1 a.m.

Police say the shot was fired from the street.

After the driver was hit, he lost control of his cab and crashed into some parked cars.

He was rushed to University Hospital, where he died.

There were no passengers in the cab at the time of the shooting.

NJ court: Drunk driver can sue bar that served him

Eyewitness NewsTRENTON -- New Jersey's Supreme Court has ruled a convicted drunken driver has the right to sue the bar that served him.

Wednesday's 5-2 ruling stems from a 2006 motorcycle crash in which Frederick Voss had a blood-alcohol level of .196 percent, or nearly two and a half times the legal limit of .08 percent.

Voss later pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated.

He sued the Toms River restaurant Tiffany's, claiming it negligently kept serving him.

The tavern said the suit isn't allowed under a state law that says people convicted of DWI cannot sue.

The court ruled that law pertains to insurance claims, not to those who serve drinks.

Police vehicles hit by suspected drunk driver

Eyewitness NewsFORT LEE, N.J. (WABC) -- Authorities say the cars of four police officers investigating one suspected drunk river were struck by another early Monday in northern New Jersey.

The four Port Authority police officers were treated for neck and back injuries at Englewood Hospital and released.

Roach was taken into custody and charges are pending. Authorities say the officers had three police cars parked on the shoulder of Interstate 95 near the George Washington Bridge after stopping a suspected drunk driver a little after 4 a.m.

A vehicle driven by 40-year-old Omar Roach rear ended one of the cruisers, police said, causing a chain reaction of crashes into two other police vehicles.

Roach was taken to Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck for treatment.

Charges against him are pending.

Driver killed in grisly wrong-way crash on NJ highway

Eyewitness NewsSPRINGFIELD (WABC) -- A driver was killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 78 in New Jersey Tuesday morning.

The victim was driving east in the westbound express lanes and collided head on with a tractor trailer just before 3 a.m. in Springfield.

The driver was crushed in the vehicle, a Volkswagen Gulf, and pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the tractor trailer was treated for minor injuries.

It was not clear why the victim was driving in the wrong direction.

The westbound express lanes were closed for more than four hours for the investigation.
