Father charged with fatally tossing tot into creek

Eyewitness NewsFREEHOLD, N.J. -- A man accused of tossing his 2-year-old daughter into a creek while she was still strapped in her car seat was indicted Monday on a murder charge.

Arthur Morgan III of Eatontown has been in jail on $10 million bail since his arrest in San Diego in November.

Tierra Morgan-Glover's body was found partially submerged in a park creek on Nov. 22. Prosecutors say Morgan had asked the girl's mother if he could take Tierra to see a movie about dancing penguins. When he didn't return her after a few hours, the mother called police.

In addition to the murder charge, Morgan is charged with interference with custody and child endangerment.

According to prosecutors, Morgan tossed the car seat, with his daughter strapped snugly inside its protective belts, from an overpass into the chilly water of the creek. To ensure that it sank, he had attached a car jack, the heavy metal contraption used to raise a car's chassis to change a flat tire.

Her cause of death was listed as "homicidal violence, including submersion in water." An autopsy determined that the child was alive when she hit the water.

Morgan's public defender declined to comment Monday.

Should Morgan be convicted, prosecutors say they will seek to have him imprisoned for the rest of his life without parole - the harshest punishment available in New Jersey since state officials instituted a moratorium on new death penalty cases several years ago.

An arraignment date in Superior Court hasn't yet been scheduled.

2 Canadian tourists fatally stabbed in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY -- A Pennsylvania woman fatally stabbed two Canadian tourists, one of them an 80-year-old woman, during a botched robbery Monday in what apparently was a chance meeting on an Atlantic City street, authorities said.

Sgt. Monica McMenamin, a city police spokeswoman, said Antoinette Pelzer, 44, was arrested around 10 a.m., just moments after the robbery occurred in the southern New Jersey resort community. Pelzer's hometown was not immediately disclosed, but authorities said she may have recently moved to the Atlantic City area.

Pelzer initially was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and weapons offenses. But Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said she would likely face more serious charges following the victims' deaths.

Pelzer remained jailed without bail Monday night, and it was not known if she had retained a lawyer.

Housel said a city police officer who happened to be patrolling in the area witnessed the robbery and stabbing, which occurred not far from the city's casino district, and quickly subdued Pelzer at gunpoint. A motive for the robbery or why Pelzer stabbed the women was not immediately known, and both police and Housel declined further comment.

Authorities identified the victims only as women ages 47 and 80 and declined to give their hometowns or provinces. Both were both stabbed multiple times in the upper body and died a short time later at a hospital.

Investigators were working Monday night to determine how long the victims had been in the Atlantic City area and where they had been staying.

2 shot, 1 fatally near City Hall, Prudential Center

Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- Police in Newark are investigating an overnight shooting just a block from City Hall and the Prudential Center that left one person dead and another wounded.

Investigators say the two people, both 23-year-old officers at the Union County juvenile detention center, were shot at the intersection of Mulberry and Green streets just after 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Both men were transported to University Hospital. Quinton Brown, of Hillside, was pronounced dead at 3:29 a.m. The second man, whose identity is being protected, is a resident of Plainfield. He remains in critical condition.

Police say both victims were patrons of a local bar, and that the shootings occurred on the street. It appears at this time that the shootings were targeted.

No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified. The investigation is active and ongoing.

Radio host April Kauffman found fatally shot

Eyewitness NewsLINWOOD -- A local radio talk show host who was known for her activism on veterans' issues has been found shot dead in her home near the Jersey shore.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel says 47-year-old April Kauffman was found around 11:30 a.m. Thursday by a worker who called 911.

Housel said Kauffman had been shot numerous times in the bedroom of her home in Linwood, about 12 miles from Atlantic City.

Kauffman hosted a weekly talk radio program on WOND, where she advocated for veterans causes and other issues.

Harry Hurley, who did several radio broadcasts with Kauffman, told The Press of Atlantic City that Kauffman "did the work of 100 people."

The prosecutor's office and the Linwood Police Department are investigating.

No arrests have been made.

NJ man fatally stabbed, another wounded

Eyewitness NewsORANGE, N.J. (WABC) -- Essex County authorities say one man was fatally stabbed and another injured during an incident early Sunday on a street in downtown Orange.

No arrests have been made in the stabbings, which occurred around 3:45 a.m., and a motive for the attacks had not been determined.

Acting County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says 25-year-old Ruben Ulloa-Castillo of Newark died from his wounds, while the second victim - identified only as a 23-year-old man - remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon.

4 shot, 3 fatally, in 3 unrelated shootings in Newark

Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- Four people were shot, three fatally, in a span of less than an hour in Newark overnight Tuesday.

The string of shootings, apparently unrelated, marked the end of the July 4th holiday weekend and came as the city battles its annual summer crime uptick with less officers on the force.

In the first, an off-duty female correction officer was fatally shot at her Columbia Street house just after 12:30 a.m.

Police say 37-year-old Katrina Owens was attending a barbeque with a male friend when the domestic dispute occurred. Owens is a married mother of three who became a corrections officer in 2003. At the time of her death, she was employed at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.

Within 10 minutes, 21-year-old Shaun Miller was fatally shot in the backyard of his home at 169 Elizabeth Avenue. There was speculation drugs may have been involved, but his family says that is not true and that his death is a tragedy because he leaves behind a 7-month-old daughter.

In the next 10 minutes, two people - a man and a woman - were each shot multiple times in the chest at 349 Osborne Terrace.

The man, identified as 24-year-old Marques Robinson, later died. The woman, believed to be his girlfriend, remains in critical condition at the hospital.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker released the following statement:

"In 45 minutes last night we had three tragic shootings. We mourn for the victims. Newark will not be deterred from our central mission to drive crime down. I remain grateful for all the many pulling together this summer. We are making progress. Violence is still down significantly from last summer. We have work to do. Our challenge really isn't the violent actions of a few bad people but the stark inaction of too many good people in Newark."
