Hunt continues for Bayonne Bridge hit-and-run driver

Eyewitness NewsBAYONNE (WABC) -- Police are still searching for the driver who was involved in an accident on the Bayonne Bridge and then stole a car and fled the scene early Friday.

The three-car crash closed down all lanes of the span, which connects Bayonne with Staten Island, for the entire Friday morning commute. The bridge reopened around 11 a.m..

Port Authority police say the suspect was initially driving a Staten Island-bound burgundy Ford van that crossed the median on the bridge and crashed head-on into a New Jersey-bound Volkswagon Passat.

When a Good Samaritan from Staten Island stopped and got out of his black Dodge 1500 pickup to offer assistance, the driver of the Ford van stole the pickup truck and sped off.

The driver and passenger in the Volkswagon were taken by ambulance to Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A female passenger suffered lacerations to her head, while the male driver sustained lacerations to his left arm.

The suspect is described only as a man about 5-foot-6. The getaway vehicle was found abandoned on Staten Island.

No arrests have been made.

65 now considered passing grade in Bayonne

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsBAYONNE, N.J. (WABC) -- Officials in a northern New Jersey school district have lowered the passing grade from 70 to 65.

It's part of a three-year pilot program for Bayonne's 9,600 students.

By lowering the standard for passing grades, the Bayonne Board of Education has certainly gained the attention of local parents, shopping today for school supplies.

"The Education Board should focus more on teaching and less on testing and scoring," one parent said.

The previous passing score for each grade was 70, as of this school year it will be 65.

The Board says the change brings Bayonne into line with other Hudson County School Districts.

Most parents Eyewitness News spoke to don't like it.

"It takes away student incentives to do better," a parent said.

The Board feels the change will help students at all levels of achievement.

In a statement, officials say:
"It is the marginal student that a passing grade of 65 will help. These students need to be given the opportunity to succeed. Having a passing grade allows students to become involved in extracurricular clubs, athletics, varsity sports, and other civic opportunities."

But even some Bayonne students are skeptical.

"The marginal students could slack off and be hurt, in the long run," a student said.

Family killed in apparent murder-suicide in Bayonne

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsBAYONNE, N.J. (WABC) -- Three adults and a baby were all killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Bayonne, New Jersey.

The Mayor of Bayonne confirmed what many in the neighborhood had feared.

"It looks like homicide and suicide," Mayor Mark Smith said.

In the home on Avenue A, 5 people were shot.

Monday night, four were dead including the gunman.

"It scares us a little bit," a neighbor said.

Residents gathered near the crime scene waiting for information and watching the investigation unfold.

One man, who didn't want to be identified, says his brother called 911 after seeing the gunman go into the home and hearing shots.

That was around 7:30 p.m.

"He goes back into the house and you know the rest," Smith said.

Sources tell Eyewitness News, three adults were shot and killed inside along with an infant.

"Came in as shots were fired, there was a dispute and it progressed from there," Smith said.

One person survived the shooting and was rushed to the hospital.
