New Jersey Transit bus hits, kills pedestrian

Eyewitness NewsPASSAIC (WABC) -- A New Jersey Transit bus struck and killed a pedestrian in Passaic Thursday morning.

Police say the victim was struck at around 7 a.m.

The pedestrian was pinned under the bus and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The bus, on route 74U, was going south to Newark at the time of the crash.

It had 48 to 50 passengers on board and was headed south on Main Avenue.

The passengers were transferred to another bus and the driver was removed.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating.

Wrong way crash kills 1, injures 2

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- A gruesome and deadly crash happened in Newark when a plumbing truck went the wrong way and crashed into a minivan, cutting it half.

One person is dead and two others were hurt.

The big question is: what was wrong with the driver?

The red plumbing truck slammed into the green minivan with such force that it sliced the van in two, sending one half of it airborne before it landed a hundred feet away into a parking lot.

"Saw the truck and van. In the blink of an eye, it was over. (How fast?) 75 miles per hour," said Dexter Crumpler, a witness.

10 minutes before this crash, a good nine blocks away, that red truck passed a man along a side street and he says it was barreling towards Springfield Avenue.

"I was walking to work, he was going, could be 100 miles per hour, blowing through red lights, he swerved around a bus. I said this man is going to kill somebody," said Rodney Grant, a Newark resident.

The adult male passenger in the van surely died instantly, possibly on impact.

His dismembered body was recovered from the van and the parking lot.

It was a scene that shook the hearts of dozens of people who ran over, to try to help the drivers of both vehicles.

"I saw the man, he was shaking, just shaking," said Saleemah Battle, a witness.

"At first he was disoriented, they put him in the grass. He was asking for his hat, he told the cops his name," a witness said.

Witnesses say the truck was going the wrong way down a one way street towards Springfield, as the minivan approached the same intersection from the opposite side, and that neither driver saw the other.

Fiery wreck on NJ Turnpike kills truck driver

Eyewitness NewsEAST WINDSOR, N.J. -- A truck driver died in a fiery crash that delayed southbound traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike for hours.

Acting State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman says the preliminary investigation shows that a box truck in the center lane crashed into the back of a UPS tractor-trailer in East Windsor at 12:26 a.m. Tuesday.

Grossman says the front of the box truck and rear of the trailer burst into flames.

Grossman says the driver of the box truck, 33-year-old Phillip Frey of Toms River, died.

The UPS driver was not injured.

Southbound turnpike traffic was diverted at Interchange 9 in East Brunswick until 6:15 a.m.

The accident investigation remains ongoing.

Stray bullet kills New Brunswick man in his home

By Matt KozarNEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WABC) -- Authorities in New Brunswick are investigating the death of a man who was killed in his own home, by a stray bullet.

The freak fatal shooting happened inside a gated community in broad daylight.

The bullet passed through the second story window of a townhouse on Birch Court Friday afternoon.

40 year old Richard Chang, a contractor who lived with his wife, was struck and killed.

After hearing the shots, neighbors flooded 9-1-1 with calls reporting gunfire in the vicinity of the victim's townhouse.

Police immediately cordoned off the area, questioned neighbors and continue to search for a suspect, but no arrests have been made.

A preliminary investigation has determined that Chang was not the intended victim.

No one else was injured.

Chang has security cameras mounted on his home, but it's not clear if they captured what happened or who was involved.

Pearl Oduro lives with her two-year-daughter on the quiet, residential street where the shooting happened.

She's one of several residents who complained to us about the broken security gates at the entrance of her complex.

Residents tell us neighborhood gangs frequently cut through the property and sometimes hang out on the corner.

"This neighborhood is supposed to be gated, but this gate is always up for the past over two years," said Oduro.

"I feel like the management could have prevented this."

We were unable to reach the management company for comment.

House fire kills man in Roselle, NJ

Eyewitness NewsROSELLE, N.J. (WABC) -- Authorities say a man found inside a burning northern New Jersey home apparently died from smoke inhalation.

Fire fighters responded to reports of a burning home in Roselle before dawn.

Rescue crews found a man collapsed in the kitchen. He died a short time later.

Fire officials said that Albert Stapperfenne - believed to be in his early 60s - was the only person inside the single-family home when firefighters arrived around 5:20 a.m. Sunday.

The three-alarm fire apparently started in the living room on the home's first floor.

The blaze then spread up the stairs to the attic, causing significant damage to the home before it was contained around 6 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though authorities say it does not appear to be suspicious.
