Passengers injured when bus overturns in Wayne

Eyewitness NewsWAYNE (WABC) -- A bus carrying about 60 people overturned Saturday morning on an Interstate 80 exit ramp in Wayne, New Jersey.

The accident happened at about 7:45 a.m. when the bus overturned on a highway exit ramp and slid down an embankment.

Police believe the driver was travelling at a high rate of speed, and was unable to negotiate the curve coming off the exit ramp.

Some windows burst during the collision and the frames pinned three people, but they were quickly freed and taken to hospitals with the other victims.

The bus was chartered by Cynthia Tours based in Toronto. The passengers were a mix - some were part of a church group, others were coming down to visit family. There were also drop off locations in both Manhattan and Flatbush. The bus was attempting to come over through that overpass when it skidded into a muddy ditch.

"I just felt a big boom, people started flying," said passenger John Anthony.

Anthony was the first to climb out of the broken front windshield of the Canadian Tour Bus and call for help. He took pictures of the frantic rescue.

All 56 people on board left Toronto at 6 p.m. on Friday evening. They passengers had plans to spend their three-day Canadian Thanksgiving holiday weekend in New York. The bus then lost control and flipped over near Exit 53 on I-80 East in Wayne around 7:40 Saturday morning.

That is when passengers sprang into action. Warren Lawrence helped 15 people out of a rooftop hatch.

"The bus was lying on its side - people want to get out," Lawrence said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The 51-year-old driver is Neville Larmond, who is in the hospital suffrering from a gashed arm. As a matter of routine, investigators will look into whether drugs and alcohol were involved.

The accident backed up traffic in the area for hours while law enforcement officials and emergency services vehicles attended to the scene.

Several highways connect there, and the area is known locally as the "spaghetti bowl".

2 injured in New Jersey plane crash

Two people were injured when a small plane crashed at Central Jersey Regional Airport in Manville Thursday.

Eyewitness NewsMANVILLE, N.J. (WABC) -- Two people were injured when a small plane crashed at Central Jersey Regional Airport in Manville Thursday.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the twin-engine Beech 76 landed short of the runway.

The plane overturned and there was a fuel spill, authorities said.

The pilot and passenger were taken to a hospital. The extent of their injuries isn't known.

The FAA says the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Grandfather struck by lightning killed, 9 injured

Matt Kozar, Eyewitness NewsDEMAREST (WABC) -- A 71-year-old man was struck by lightning at Northern Valley Regional High School on Friday afternoon, according to Demarest Fire Department.

It was supposed to an enjoyable Friday afternoon for a grandfather who'd come to watch his granddaughter play soccer.

Instead, around 4:15 p.m. he was struck by lightning and he died at Hackensack Medical Center.

It came out of the sky, through the clouds with a vengeance, stripping the bark off a tree and impaling debris into the neatly trimmed playing fields at Demarest High School.

It was a deadly bolt of lightning that killed a 71-year-old man from Haworth who'd come to watch his granddaughter, a freshman, play soccer.

He was airlifted to Hackensack Medical Center after getting struck, but police tell Eyewitness News the helicopter had to land several miles away because it wasn't safe on school grounds.

"There were a hundred plus students who were evacuated into the south gym for safety purposes," said Chief James Powderly, Demarest Police Department.

"We did see the lightning. We saw it come down from the sky. It was a huge bolt. It was all over the place. So it not only had gotten here, but there was also lightning on the football field. That's why we ran upstairs because we didn't want to be in the line of fire," said Eli Nachmany, a student.

Nine students complained of tingling sensations and first responders rushed them to area hospitals to be evaluated.

This is the third lightning related death this summer.

In July, a 48-year-old woman was killed at a beach in Monmouth County when a line of fast moving storms blew through the area.

In August, a 41-year-old died after getting struck by lightning while fishing with his son in Long Branch.

Back at Demarest High School, the first week back from summer recess has been marked by death and tragedy, particularly for those students who watched it unfold.

"We made sure that our crisis team is here to assess the situation," said Christopher Nagy, Superintendent.

Investigators have not yet released the name of the man who died.

The police chief told Eyewitness News he was on the grounds when this storm was overhead.

He says it was so loud he thought something exploded.

3 injured, 4 homes destroyed in Perth Amboy fire

Eyewitness NewsPERTH AMBOY, N.J. (WABC) -- Authorities say an intense, fast-moving fire destroyed four multi-family homes in Perth Amboy and seriously injured three people.

Dozens of people were also left homeless by the massive blaze, which started around 4 a.m. Sunday. Crews from 10 different fire departments responded, but by the time the first group arrived, 2 of the structures were already almost gone.

"I was sleeping and I heard a boom, boom, boom and when I came outside everyone was screaming and crying," Perth Amboy resident Luis Gonzalez said.

The fire was too much to bare for Jose Nunez, and his son, Randy. The top floor, where the 15-year-old was sleeping is completely gone. Randy's knees are bandaged and bruised. He fell trying to get away from the flames and had the scare of his life in all of the chaos. While some people were able to piece things back together, Jose wasn't as lucky.

"I lost everything, I don't have anything, this is all I have," he said.

The three injured people - a couple and their infant daughter - were hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Roughly 75 firefighters battled the stubborn blaze, which damaged several other homes and burned for several hours before it was brought under control.

Witnesses said it appeared to be "raining ashes" as crews worked to extinguish the massive flames.

It was a five-alarm fire, and authorities were concerned it could jump across the street to other homes in the neighborhood.

A wide radius of at least 30 homes and 50 residents were evacuated.

"I haven't seen that amount of fire in a very very long time and I've been doing this for more than 30 years. I was very very concerned about this fire moving in multiple directions," said Perth Amboy Fire Chief David Volk.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Most of the displaced residents were taken to a shelter set up at a school. Some later left to stay with family and friends, but Red Cross officials said many people would likely be spending the night at the shelter.

Suspect critically injured in shootout with police

Adam Stephan, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- A suspect was injured during a police involved shooting in Newark.

It happened Monday just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Livingston Street.

NJ State Police troopers and Newark Police officers were both pursuing the suspect apparently, according to police scanners, for his involvement in a carjacking.

The chase ended in a crash and shots were exchanged between the cops and the suspect.

The suspect was shot multiple times and is being transported to University Hospital in critical condition.

Multiple crime scenes have been established in the area as a result of the pursuit.

No police officers were shot.

Man seriously injured in NJ Turnpike crash

Eyewitness NewsEAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WABC) -- Traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike is back to normal after an accident backed things up for miles.

It happened at the peak of rush hour, in East Brunswick.

Police say a van flipped in the northbound lane.

Traffic was backed up for miles and the outer lanes of the turnpike had to be shut down as rescue workers worked to free the driver.

He is in serious condition.
