No charges filed against cops in fatal police shooting

  Eyewitness NewsNEW BRUNSWICK -- Outraged family members met with a New Jersey prosecutor Friday after a grand jury declined to file charges in a fatal police shooting in New Brunswick.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan announced Thursday the panel decided not to indict police officers Brad Berdel and Daniel Mazan in the shooting death of 46-year-old Barry Deloatch.

Prosecutors say Deloatch ran off Sept. 22, 2011, after the officers approached him and two other men. A subsequent chase ended with Berdel shooting Deloatch.

Officials say Deloatch threatened the officers with a board. The family says he was unarmed.

Deloatch's sons say they're devastated.

Kaplan says the grand jury met for 11 consecutive weeks, heard 57 witnesses, and reviewed 280 exhibits.

Kaplan says the case will undergo an administrative review by the police department.

A lawyer for the family says Kaplan hasn't assured them that steps have been taken to prevent similar incidents.

Double fatal car crash in Franklin Township

  FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP (WABC) -- Two people were killed in single car crash in Franklin Township in Somerset County.

The accident happened at around 5:45 p.m on Route 27 near Promenade Boulevard. Police say the car veered off the road and struck a large boulder.

The names and ages of the victims have not been released.

It's not immediately clear what caused the accident.

A section of the roadway remains closed for the investigation.

Cop: 'Melrose' actress giggled after fatal crash

  MONTGOMERY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A police officer says an actress who had appeared in the "Melrose Place" television series was giggling and laughing after a motor vehicle crash that killed a New Jersey woman.

The officer says Amy Locane-Bovenizer said police and emergency personnel were "being overly dramatic."

Montgomery Police Officer William Wilkes testified Monday during a hearing to determine whether statements the actress made to police after the June 2010 crash will be admissible at her trial.

Locane-Bovenizer is charged with aggravated manslaughter stemming from the death of 60-year-old Helene Seeman.

Prosecutors allege the 39-year-old actress, who lives in Hopewell, was drunk and speeding when her SUV struck a vehicle driven by Seeman's husband.

The court hearing will continue Tuesday with cross-examination.

Man charged in fatal robbery at NJ gas station

  Eyewitness NewsMORRISTOWN, N.J. -- Felony murder charges have been filed against a man accused in the dragging death of a northern New Jersey gas station owner.

Bail was set Sunday at $750,000 for 34-year-old Ronnie Fedo of Lake Hopatcong. He's also charged with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and robbery in connection with Saturday afternoon's incident in Jefferson Township.

Speaking at a news conference Sunday in Morristown, Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi said Fedo arrived at the Getty Gas Station in a sport utility vehicle around 1:15 p.m. and went into its convenience store. At the time, the station's owner - 65-year-old Nisan Ambaroglu of Paramus - was working at the gas pumps and no staffers were in the store.

Fedo soon reached over the counter and took some lottery tickets that he put in his pants pocket, Bianchi said. Ambaroglu then entered the store a short time later and Fedo, after making unrelated purchase, left and entered his vehicle.

After realizing what had happened, Ambaroglu ran out and went to the driver's side window of the SUV in a bid to stop Fedo, who drove off and dragged Ambaroglu through the parking lot and then for about 100 yards on Route 15 South. Ambaroglu then fell from the vehicle and ended up in the roadway as Fedo drove away.

Ambaroglu, who had owned the gas station for about seven years, was taken to Saint Clare's Hospital in Dover, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. But further details on his injuries and a cause of death have not been disclosed By late Saturday afternoon, authorities had released video of the incident and photographs of the suspect. And around 10 p.m.

Saturday, Jefferson police were called by a worker at another township business - not far from the gas station - who recognized Fedo.

After further investigation, authorities went to Fedo's home and arrested him without incident. They also found the SUV they believe he was driving when the incident occurred.

Bianchi said Fedo was later admitted to a local hospital for treatment of a leg infection - which was unrelated to the gas station incident - and remained there Sunday afternoon. When he is released, he will be taken to the county jail.
