Camden makes moves to disband police force

  Eyewitness NewsCAMDEN (WABC) -- Camden's city council has taken a major step toward disbanding the city police force to make way for a new county force.

The City Council on Monday agreed to hire Lanuel Ferguson as a consultant. The former New Jersey State Police major will represent the city's interests during the changeover.

The county police force is a new agency. But so far, no town besides Camden has agreed to hand over its patrols.

The city, which is among the nation's most dangerous, believes it can have more officers on the street under a new system. But it also means that all of the 270 officers now with the Camden Police will be laid off by year's end.

Police unions are trying to stop the change.

Heat makes battling two New Jersey fires difficult

  Eyewitness NewsEDISON (WABC) -- The sizzling heat made it difficult for firefighters to battle fires in Edison and Union City on Wednesday night.

The three-alarm fire in Edison started at the Rivendell Heights condo complex on 1602 Yosko Drive at around 6:40 p.m.

The fire damaged about 25 percent of the building, including a large portion of the roof. Ten families were displaced, but no injuries were reported to residents or firefighters. The fire was under control within an hour, and the cause is still under investigation.

The five-alarm fire in Union City started in a three-story building on 2816 Kennedy Boulevard at around 9:20 p.m.

Extra firefighters were called in for relief purposes because of the intense heat. ---

New Jersey Transit makes plans to cut 5 bus routes

  Eyewitness NewsNEWARK -- NJ Transit will hold two hearings next month on planned changes to bus routes that the agency says will save more than $3 million a year.

The proposal calls for discontinuing five routes in Newark, Jersey City, Butler, Secaucus and Bloomfield and eliminating service on six other routes.

NJ Transit says those routes either suffer from low ridership or compete with train or light rail services.

The agency plans to create around the clock service between Newark, Newark Liberty International Airport and the Elizabeth Corridor.

Newark-Hillside Cross-town buses would be extended to the Branch Brook Park Newark Light Rail Station.

NJ Transit executive director James Weinstein says the plan would provide the best service to the most customers while holding the line on fares.

Jet from NJ makes emergency landing in Louisville

  Eyewitness NewsLOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A commercial jet has made a precautionary emergency landing at Louisville International Airport.

Jim Faulkner, a spokesman for American Airlines, said a cockpit indicator showed a fuel transfer problem Monday afternoon so the plane landed as a precaution. No one was injured.

American Airlines flight 2559 with 142 passengers and a crew of five reported the emergency around 4:50 p.m. The MD-80 aircraft landed safely just after 5 p.m, and continued on later to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. .
