Eyewitness NewsNEWARK -- NJ Transit will hold two hearings next month on planned changes to bus routes that the agency says will save more than $3 million a year. The proposal calls for discontinuing five routes in Newark, Jersey City, Butler, Secaucus and Bloomfield and eliminating service on six other routes.
NJ Transit says those routes either suffer from low ridership or compete with train or light rail services.
The agency plans to create around the clock service between Newark, Newark Liberty International Airport and the Elizabeth Corridor.Newark-Hillside Cross-town buses would be extended to the Branch Brook Park Newark Light Rail Station.
NJ Transit executive director James Weinstein says the plan would provide the best service to the most customers while holding the line on fares.
