New Jersey police shoot suspect following chase

  Eyewitness NewsBRICK TOWNSHIP (WABC) -- An investigation is under way in New Jersey after a state trooper shot a man early Wednesday morning in Ocean County.

The shooting came after a long cross-state police chase that ended in Brick Township.

Investigators say the pursuit began when a trooper attempted to stop 30-year-old Michael Zaun for a motor vehicle violation in West Trenton around 12:30 a.m.

Zaun allegedly fled along Interstate 195 and the Garden State Parkway, eventually ending up on the front lawn of a home.

That's where the trooper shot him as he tried to run to the front door of the home.

Zaun was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

No troopers were injured in the incident.

Troopers reported that Zaun fired a gun during the vehicle pursuit. Zaun's vehicle has not yet been searched. It was impounded and taken to Hamilton Station as evidence, pending an application for a search warrant.

Detectives learned that Zaun's vehicle was involved in a police pursuit in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, earlier in the evening, but the driver was not apprehended during that incident.

The Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is investigating the incident.

No charges have yet been filed.

The names of the troopers involved are not yet being released. Typically, troopers involved in shooting incidents are temporarily placed on administrative leave.

Police chase ends in violent crash in Newark

  John Antalek, Eyewitness NewsNEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are searching for a driver who led officers on a high speed chase that ended with a violent crash.

It happened in Newark Friday evening.

Police say the driver crashed into another vehicle that had a mother and her 7-year-old son inside.

The boy was thrown from the vehicle but survived.

The suspect escaped on foot.

Police arrest 2 suspected shoplifters after chase

TEANECK, N.J. (WABC) -- Police say two men are under arrest after they allegedly shoplifted from various CVS Pharmacy Stores in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Teaneck Police had a description of the suspects' white van. Bogota Police were the first to spot the van.

There was no high speed pursuit, but when police attempted to pull the men over, the driver panicked and drove over a tree and destroyed a small brick wall.

Once they crashed, the men fled on foot. One of the suspects was captured by police immediately, the other suspect ran into a neighbor's backyard and police spotted him and arrested him.

No one was injured.

Shooting, chase, and a deadly end in Newark

  Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- A shooting, and then a car chase, and finally a crash into a third vehicle. When it all came to end, an innocent man was dead in Newark.

The crash happened on Sanford Avenue on Saturday morning.

Witnesses say a gun was found at the found at the scene.

The incident allegedly began when shots were fired from one car at another car. A chase ensued that ended in a collision with the third car.

The driver of the third car was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others suffered injuries.

The force with which the cars hit is as evident from their blasted front ends and shattered windshields as it is from a now-battered intersection, with a light pole cut in half, a fire hydrant toppled and part of a brick building in pieces on the ground.

Three people from the first two cars are hospitalized and have been charged with aggravated assault and weapons charges. Their identities and the identity of the victim were not immediately released.

Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating.
