Suspicious fire rips through houses in Irvington

IRVINGTON (WABC) -- A four-alarm fire that authorities have deemed suspicious burned through several homes in Irvington Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out in a vacant home, known to residents as a drug den, on 20th Avenue just after 2:30 a.m. It quickly spread down the block.

Firefighters, who arrived to find the building where the fire started completely engulfed in flames, had a scary challenge fighting the fire after live electrical lines began falling from overhead utility poles.

A barking dog awoke residents in a neighboring building to the flames.

One woman was trapped, but managed to escape.

Residents said they suspect squatters in the vacant building started the fire.

At least eight people were displaced. No serious injuries were reported.

The cause is under investigation.
