Eyewitness NewsMERCER COUNTY (WABC) -- A New Jersey woman and her live-in boyfriend are under arrest, accused of tying up and abusing the woman's four children.
Police say 33-year-old Plesie Nichols and 28-year-old Anthony Roberson were charged with endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes after Nichols' 8-year-old daughter begged detectives dispatched to her home on a court matter to save her and her siblings.
Officers said the girl was found to have serious injuries on her arms, apparently from being tied to a bannister and to doorknobs. She was also severely malnourished.
"She said, 'Please take me away from her,'" Mercer County Sheriff's Officer William Osterman told NJ.com. "She said that her mother was tying her up and beating her."The four children were discovered in the South Logan Street home amid deplorable conditions, officials said, including dead rodents and rotting food.
"Every detective involved in this, including myself, are heartbroken by what these poor children endured, especially the 8-year-old girl," Sheriff Jack Kemler told the website. "No one should have to live like that, and no one should be treated like that."
The 8-year-old girl was taken to the hospital for treatment. The other children, ranging in age from a baby to 5 years old, were removed from the home.
The weapons charges stem from the rope and shoelaces that were allegedly used to retrain the girl.
They are each being held on $150,000 bail.
