LukOil stations charge $9 a gallon to protest prices

Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- Motorists might be in for a shock at the price of gasoline at some LukOil stations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

More than 50 franchise owners raised their prices to nearly $9 a gallon Wednesday morning to protest what they say is the company's unjustified pricing policies.

Sal Risalvato, of the New Jersey Gasoline Convenience-Automotive Association, says that LukOil dealers have to charge more because they pay between 5 and 20 cents more than competitors.

Risalvato says the company has been slow to respond to requests to lower prices.

"Today, a group of LUKOIL franchisees stood together to defend their small businesses and motorists in order to vocally oppose the anti-competitive treatment they and their customers receive at the hands of LUKOIL North America," Risalvato said in a statement. "Their grievances have gone unanswered and unheeded for too long now, leaving them with little recourse."

After they make their point, the dealers plan to reduce prices to a more normal level.

Homicide charge filed in New Jersey man's death

AP  Eyewitness NewsHANOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A northern New Jersey woman who allegedly was driving under the influence when she hit and killed a pedestrian this weekend has been charged with vehicular homicide.

Bail was set Sunday at $100,000 cash for 32-year-old Vanessa E. Brown of Parsippany. She also faces numerous motor vehicle charges.

Morris County prosecutors say Brown was driving in Hanover Township when she lost control of her car around 1:45 p.m. Saturday and struck 49-year-old Ralph Politi Jr. of East Hanover.

Politi was standing by the driver's side door of his pickup truck, which was parked in a parking space parallel to the road.

After hitting Politi, Brown's car traveled another 60 feet through a parking lot before hitting some parked cars.

Authorities did not know Sunday if Brown had retained a lawyer.
