4 members of NJ family arrested in drug bust

Eyewitness NewsNEPTUNE, N.J. -- New Jersey authorities say they've arrested four members of a Monmouth County family in a major marijuana and weapons bust.

Brothers Khalid and Taj Thomas and their parents, Pierre and Illma, were arrested Monday after officers from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Gang Task Force raided their homes in Neptune Township and Tinton Falls.

Authorities seized more than 150 pounds of marijuana, several guns, thousands of rounds of ammunition, narcotics paraphernalia, 15 cellphones and more than $15,000 in cash.

All four defendants are charged with drug possession and possession with intent to distribute.

The brothers and their father are being held at the Monmouth County Jail. The mother was released on her own recognizance.

The prosecutor's office said the defendants had not yet retained legal counsel.

Police search for Jersey City rapist

It's the second recent attack in the same neighborhood.

Hudson County investigators are looking into a possible link between this latest attack and a similar crime in late March.

Women Eyewitness News talked to Tuesday are taking steps to protect themselves from the serial rapist.

"I'm really petrified," said Kimberly Conyers, a Jersey City resident.

Kimberly Conyers opens her daycare center at 6 a.m. most days, but she won't be unlocking the door alone anymore.

"I'm going to have my brother walk me because it's very scary," Conyers said.

Business owners and residents all along Bergen Avenue near Fairmount in Jersey City are nervous Tuesday, after a young woman was brutally attacked early Sunday morning at around 1:30 a.m.

She was walking home when a man grabbed her from behind and demanded money, then he dragged her to a quiet spot, and raped her.

He ran off when a neighbor came by.

"Some friend told me to buy the pepper spray but now I think I need to do it," said Maria Belliard, a Jersey City resident.

Investigators say the suspect is a black man, 25-35 years old, standing 5'7" who is in good physical shape.

He was last seen wearing a dark colored t-shirt, a red cap, maroon sweatpants and sneakers.

The description of both the suspect and the attack sound eerily similar to another rape in Jersey City back in March.

In that case, the suspect was on a bike on Harrison Avenue near Bergen Avenue at around 1 a.m. when he put his victim in a chokehold, dragged her into an alley, and raped her.

Monique Smith Andrews owns a salon nearby.

"I instantly thought of my clients because when they leave late at night they will need someone to walk them to their cars because you never know," Smith Andrews said.

There were surveillance cameras in the area of the most recent attack, and police are hoping to release an image soon to ask for the public's help in finding this attacker.

Authority ends E-ZPass break for non-NJ customers

Eyewitness NewsWOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Drivers who have E-ZPass accounts in other states soon won't get off-peak discounts when they pass through New Jersey.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority voted unanimously to end the discounts on Tuesday, spokesman Tom Feeney said. The change will go into effect on July 1 and will affect Class 1, or passenger, vehicles traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The authority estimated that E-ZPass users who set up their accounts in other states will now pay about 34 percent more during off-peak travel through New Jersey. New Jersey E-ZPass customers won't be affected by the change.

Off-peak hours are defined as anytime Monday through Friday except for 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The new rates would raise an estimated $16 million a year, Feeney said. Projections for July 1 through the end of the year were not available.

Other states, including Delaware and New York, already use similar pricing models for in-state and out-of-state accounts, Feeney said.

Anyone can set up an E-ZPass account in New Jersey, even non-residents, and E-Z-Pass customers can have accounts in more than one state.
