PATH service resumes between Hoboken, Manhattan

  Eyewitness NewsHOBOKEN -- PATH service has resumed at the Hoboken station for the first time since Superstorm Sandy.

Trains between Hoboken and the 33rd Street station in Manhattan will initially run daily in both directions from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m.

With this latest service restoration following Superstorm Sandy, travelers now can access the entire PATH system between New Jersey and New York. The return of Hoboken service provides more than 29,000 commuters with restored mass transit between Hoboken and Midtown Manhattan. Sandy flooded PATH tunnels with up to eight feet of water and destroyed critical signal and switching systems.

Shutting down service the past two weeks allowed workers long uninterrupted stretches to make repairs, allowing the speedier reopening of the Hoboken PATH station.

Officials say the return of limited 24-hour PATH service is expected in time for New Year's Eve.

Funeral service Friday for teen killed in Bloomfield crash

  Web produced by Bill King, Eyewitness NewsBLOOMFIELD (WABC) -- Funeral services will be held in New Jersey Friday for a teenager killed in a car crash last weekend.

Hundreds of mourners turned out at a wake in Bloomfield Thursday night to pay their respects to 16-year-old Christina Lembo.

Friends remember Lembo, a junior at Bloomfield High School, as a sweet, smart athlete. Four other people were hurt in the crash, none of them seriously. The driver, Omar Baldeon, was consumed with thoughts of what, if anything, he could have done differently.

Baldeon was driving with two classmates in the car just after 11 p.m. when a black Camaro that eyewitnesses believe was drag racing with another car blind-sided him, slamming into his Honda Civic.

No charges have yet been filed. The case is expected to go to a grand jury.

PATH service resumes after smoke condition

  Eyewitness NewsHOBOKEN -- PATH has resumed service between Hoboken and 33rd Street in New York City following a smoky condition on a train.

Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman says the train became disabled just before reaching Hoboken at 7:22 a.m. Tuesday.

Coleman says there were reports that some passengers had pulled the emergency cord to open doors and jump off the train.

Coleman says officials had to shut down power to check the tracks.

No passengers were found and PATH service resumed at 8:05 a.m.

There were no reports of injuries and officials haven't determined what caused the problem on the train.

9/11 Memorial service held in Jersey City

  Eyewitness NewsJERSEY CITY (WABC) -- New Jersey was a critical place of refuge in the hours after the 9/11 attacks.

Thousands of people fled Lower Manhattan to the safety of Jersey City just across the Hudson River from Ground Zero.

Monday evening, dozens of people gathered for a somber memorial service.

It was held at "Empty Sky," New Jersey's 9/11 memorial located inside Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

Interfaith service held after NJ rabbi is targeted

  Eyewitness NewsRUTHERFORD, N.J. (WABC) -- People of different religions joined as one, uniting against hate in Rutherford, New Jersey.

An interfaith service took place Saturday night.

It was held at Congregation Beth-El.

That was the scene of Wednesday's firebombing targeting a rabbi.

It was the fourth attack against a Bergen County synagogue in the past month.

The service is meant to be a show of solidarity against hate crimes.

Interfaith service held at desecrated temple

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsHACKENSACK, N.J. (WABC) -- A special interfaith service was held at a temple in New Jersey that was desecrated by vandals last week.

Religious and community leaders came together to rededicate Temple Beth El and rally against hate.

"I'm here because injustice to one is injustice to all," said Rev. Gregory Jackson, of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

"We stand together with Temple Beth El to stand up against these acts of hate," said Rev. Donald Pitches, of the Bergen Co. Council of Churches, and a Presbyterian minister.

People of many religions prayed and stood in solidarity with the people of Temple Beth El, where outside, cowards scrawled swastikas and nasty messages on the first night of Hanukkah.

"I visited Poland, I saw the remnants of the Jewish community of Europe which was destroyed by Hitler, so to see swastikas on a building is very, very upsetting on a personal level," said Robert Schumeister, of Temple Beth El member.

So far, no one has been arrested, but police are trying to catch them.

"For this to be happening in this day and age, I hope it was pranks," said Mayor Jorge Menses, of the City of Hackensack.

On this final night of Hanukkah, where songs of peace were sung, this gathering had a counter message as all joined to light the menorah of many faiths.

"Too many people died, cried to say nothing," a member said.

"We want you to know, these candles, are calling you out," another member said.

Service members' ashes dumped into landfill

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsFRENCHTOWN, N.J. (WABC) -- It was a call no wife should ever have to take. Her husband was killed while serving his country overseas.

But, when his remains came home, his treatment was anything but dignified.

What happened to him is part of a national scandal.

The remains of hundreds of service members were dumped in a landfill, but how could that happen?

"He told me no one wanted your husband, so he was cremated along with the rest of the medical waste from the hospital and thrown in the trash," said Gari Lynn Smith, widow.

Gari Lynn Smith couldn't believe what she'd just heard.

Is it possible that the very people who are charged with the dignified disposition of the bodies of American soldiers who fought and died for their country could have done that to her husband? So, she asked in writing.

"That's when I received a letter from Dover stating that he was thrown in a landfill and that this brings you comfort," Smith said.

Scott Smith had the most dangerous job on earth in 2006, he checked and disposed of improvised explosive devices, bombs, in Iraq.

He was disposing of one bomb when he stepped on another and it exploded.

Most of his body was recovered immediately, but some parts were not included in the casket that his widow buried, and that is the portion that the Pentagon admits was cremated and disposed of in a landfill.

Thursday, the Pentagon admitted the partial remains of 274 soldiers were disposed of in that way.

"We regret any additional grief to the families that past practices may have caused. We are proud of the Dover Mortuary and employees in their unfailing dedication. It is their commitment to the mission that resulted in the changes to these processes in 2008," said Lt. Gen. Darrel D. Jones, U.S. Air Force.

"I really thought that at least my husband was taken care of and treated with honor and dignity at Dover because they of all the people in this country would know how important it is for these soldiers and service members coming through the halls," Smith said.

PATH train service resumes after investigation

  Eyewitness NewsNEW JERSEY (WABC) -- All PATH train service was suspended for more than 2 hours Saturday night as police investigated a suspicious package.

NJ Transit officials say police removed an unattended package at the Grove Street station in Jersey City.

The PATH service suspension began around 7:45 p.m. and service resumed just before 10:00 p.m.

No word on what was inside the unattended package.
