Suspects sought in violent store robbery

NEWARK (WABC) -- Mike Javier owns Monte's Supermarket on 15th Avenue in Newark, a fixture in his neighborhood for 40 years.

He has 16 security cameras and 3 very scared but lucky employees. At 10:30 Monday morning, two young men wearing hooded sweatshirts under jackets walked in.

They pretended to buy a drink and then a man in black pulls out a silver semi automatic handgun and demands money from the female cashier.

"She drops. As soon as she sees the gun she just drops to the ground," Javier explained.

Another employee puts his hands behind his back.

"He tells him to get down. He does, and then bam, he hits him," Javier said.

The gunman split his head open. Within minutes, it's all over. A puddle of blood on the floor and 3 workers who thought they were going to die.

Manny Santana was one of them.

"I mean you never think it's gonna happen," he said.

The pair of thugs got just 154 dollars, but what they took from Manny and the others cannot be measured.

"Get up every morning and go to work and they come in here to do that. It's not fair," he said.

"I just really want them to get caught cause the kid didn't have to get hit like that. And the girl, she went home and broke down. She has 3 kids," Javier said.

Traffic stop nets suspects with $783K hidden in car

FORT LEE -- Two men from New York face charges after a New Jersey state trooper found more than $783,000 in their vehicle during a traffic stop.

State police say the driver and passenger, Franklin Delacruz and Jose Carnillo, both 45, both from the Bronx, were travelling on I-95 recently when the SUV caught Trooper Steve Spitaleri's attention.

"Swerving in and out of lane, meaning changing lanes without using a signal, cutting back and forth between the left and center lane," said Spitaleri.

Trooper Eric Tapia came on the scene to translate, and found the mens' stories didn't add up.

"Where they were coming from, where they were going," said Tapia. "Also, issues with their relationship."

A K-9 unit picked up a scent of drugs, and the Ford Expedition was trucked to the State Police barracks.

In the back was a box.

It took police 25 minutes to crack it open, and it contained a cache of cash.

Delacruz and Carnillo have been charged with money laundering and conspiracy.

They're each held in the Bergen County Jail on $500,000 bail.

The money and the truck were confiscated.

Once the case goes to court, if it's found that the money is ill gotten gains, it will go into state and county accounts to fight crime.

Operation Summer Shield nets 176 suspects in Jersey City

  Eyewitness NewsJERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A new effort, called Operation Summer Shield, is underway in an effort to keep the streets of Jersey City safe.

Repeat crime offenders and other fugitives are being rounded up.

Officials hope Jersey City will see a decrease in violence because more guns are off the streets. It's all part of a proactive strike by police agencies to target violent parolees and offenders to get them locked up before summer.

Operation Summer Shield led to the arrests of 176 people on charges ranging from owing child support to rape and murder. Anthony Florence was accused of a violent assault and continued to target the victim. He's in custody because of this effort.

Members of the state police, prosecutor's office, Marshal service and other federal agencies teamed up to clean up the streets. These partnerships are becoming common in the state as police agencies deal with budgets cuts while still fighting crime.

This latest operation took five months and still continues but the results are encouraging.
