World Trade Center spire hoisted atop building

Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK -- The first section of the spire that will crown One World Trade Center has been hoisted atop the building.

It was lifted onto the 104-story building on Wednesday.

Nine of 18 giant steel pieces of the spire arrived at the site in New York City Tuesday via barge from Port Newark, N.J.

The arrival marked the end of a 1,500-nautical-mile journey that started in Canada on Nov. 16.

A plant outside Montreal produced the 18 pieces. The spire will make the tower the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The remaining nine pieces of the 408-foot, $20 million spire are being trucked in from Canada and another plant in South Plainfield, N.J.

School looks for solutions after fire destroys building

HOBOKEN, New Jersey (WABC) -- On Thursday, more than 200 kids and teachers got out of their school as smoke and flames filled hallways.

They were all out and safe in less than a minute, then within a couple of hours the K-8 charter school they fought to build for two years was gone.

"It was hard, I love that place," said Principal Dierdra Grode.

Ms. Grode she says the damage is devastating and that they still don't know what started it or where they are going, but that school will be back in session "somewhere and somehow" by Monday.

So even though they have no building, parents, teachers and kids were all in the park making thank you notes for firefighters on Tuesday.

The day it happened everyone thought it was a fire drill. "We were in the middle of Spanish and the fire bell rang," said Ethan Zhang.

In part, because they are a service learning school, they are channeling their energy into gratitude.

Baby born in Newark apartment building hallway

NEWARK (WABC) -- Talk about a special delivery.

A baby boy was delivered in the hallway of an apartment building in Newark, with help from a police officer and the stranger who flagged down the cop.

The baby entered the world earlier than anyone expected, and with a police escort.

The boy's mother ran out of her basement apartment on Mount Pleasant Avenue and into the hallway after she went into labor.

Police got a call of a woman needing help when Officer Vernon Bradbury from the Second Precinct arrived. He ran into the building, along with a stranger from the street. That Good Samaritan and Bradbury helped successfully deliver the baby in the hallway.

Mother and child were taken to University Hospital, where both are said to be doing well.
