Gov. Christie returns to Belmar 7 weeks after Sandy

  Eyewitness NewsBELMAR -- Gov. Chris Christie returns to Belmar on Thursday, seven weeks after Hurricane Sandy badly damaged the Shore town with sea water and strong winds.

Christie will talk about storm recovery efforts and hear concerns from some of the 5,900 borough residents at a town hall meeting. Mayor Matt Doherty will introduce the governor.

Storm and home debris have been picked up and $17 million has been allocated for construction of a new 1.3-mile boardwalk. But Doherty reports that 40 children from Belmar Elementary School are still displaced, with no timetable for moving back into their permanent homes.

Christie walked along Ocean Avenue with Doherty and first responders and consoled residents the day after the hurricane.

Doherty says the Republican's return is emblematic of his continued support.

New Jersey man charged with 4th DUI in 5 weeks

  Eyewitness NewsVINELAND -- Authorities have arrested a New Jersey man on a drunken driving charge for the fourth time in five weeks.

Vineland police say 45-year-old Anderson Sotomayor was charged at 1:41 a.m. Saturday after he was spotted driving the wrong way down a one-way street, then hitting a curb and driving off the street.

Sotomayor was also charged with driving under the influence on April 9, 11 and 25.

He was also issued five summonses - not including drunken driving - on April 2. Police say that day, he swerved around a school bus as it unloaded kids, ran into a stop sign, smashed into a car and fled the scene of the accident.

2 weeks ahead of holiday, gas prices falling

  Eyewitness NewsNEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Just two weeks before the unofficial start of the summer, gas prices are falling.

The price of regular unleaded along New Jersey toll roads dropped six cents Friday morning.

Now, instead of $3.74 a gallon, drivers will only have to pay $3.68.

Typically, the price of gas goes up as summer approaches, but not this year.

The average price has been steadily declining for more than a month, dropping 20 cents.

The highest prices in our area are in Connecticut, where the average is $4.04 a gallon. In New York the average is $4.02.

Motorists are taking note.

"I live on Staten Island, but I try to fill up in Jersey every chance I get," driver Tony Ablavskiy said.
