Blind gun owner wins fight to keep weapons

See it on TV? Check here. AP  Eyewitness NewsMORRISTOWN -- A blind man in New Jersey has won a two-year legal battle to keep his gun collection.

Morris County prosecutors claimed Steven Hopler was unfit to safely maintain his handguns, claiming he abuses alcohol and was taking an antidepressant when he accidentally shot himself in his Rockaway Township home while cleaning a pistol in 2008.

But the 49-year-old Hopler, who is blind because of complications from diabetes, denies abusing alcohol and has completed a firearms safety course. And a state judge sided with him in a ruling issued Friday.

The judge said Hopler can keep his gun permit and also ordered police to return the weapons they had seized after the accidental shooting.

A court in 1994 allowed Hopler to purchase firearms and shoot them under strict conditions.

Charges upgraded in fight after Jets game

AP  Eyewitness NewsEAST RUTHERFORD -- State police have upgraded charges against a New Jersey man accused of beating a fan in the parking lot after the Jets beat the Chiefs at MetLife Stadium Sunday.

Thirty-five-year-old Merle Lee of Newton is free on bond, charged with aggravated assault.

State Police Sgt. Brian Polite says Lee was initially charged with simple assault. However, charges were upgraded after 23-year-old James Mohr's condition worsened.

Polite says the Queens resident got into a brief scuffle with some guys and the skirmish broke up on its own. Polite says Lee then "came out of the blue and punched Mohr in the face."

Polite says the incident "was not a Jets-Chiefs melee." He says witnesses told troopers there was no indication they were Kansas City fans.

Mohr is out of intensive care.
