Arrest made in Rangers' fans beating in Philly

Eyewitness NewsPHILADELPHIA (WABC) -- A Glassboro, New Jersey, man surrendered to face charges of beating two New York Rangers fans in Philadelphia, an attack caught on camera and posted online.

Police say 32-year-old Dennis Veteri is charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Police said Veteri threw the punch that turned a verbal dispute physical, then landed a blow that knocked out the victim.

Off-duty Woodbridge police officer Neal Auricchio, an Iraq war veteran, suffered a concussion in the attack and required stitches.

"This was a very, very vicious beating," said police Capt. Laurence Nodiff.

Veteri surrendered to detectives Thursday and posted $50,000 bail early Friday.

Detectives are still looking for other assailants in the January 2 beating that followed the Winter Classic hockey game.

Nodiff said Veteri and two other men were the clear aggressors after Rangers fans showed up at an intersection that features two of Philadelphia's iconic cheesesteak stands.

A video of the fight posted on YouTube shows a man police identified as Veteri whipping off his coat and throwing a punch, sparking a melee that ends with Woodbridge Township, N.J., police officer Neal Auricchio lying in the pavement after being punched.

"As we all saw on the video it is a vicious beating with the conclusion of a knock down punch which knocks the police officer unconscious," Nodiff said.

Investigators said Auricchio suffered serious facial injuries that will require reconstructive surgery.

Police said the video prompted tips that eventually led them to Veteri by way of a credit card receipt from another restaurant at the intersection that was paid just before the fight.

Online court records show Veteri has a history of arrests in Philadelphia, including a guilty plea following a 1998 aggravated assault arrest.

Veteri also has a prior criminal record of aggravated assault and drug possession in Florida.

Homeless beating victim speaks out

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsBELMAR, N.J. (WABC) -- The man who was viciously beaten by two young men who recorded the attack on camera is speaking out.

The victim is a homeless man, and there has been an outpouring of support for him.

David Ivins has a warm bed, food and clothing in the heart of Belmar.

It's a drastic change from the makeshift tent he called home in the middle of a wooded area.

"I was sitting there having a beer and they ran and jumped on me," Ivins said.

From his donated room at the Belmar Inn, David Ivins told Eyewitness News he doesn't remember much about that afternoon.

That day, two young men decided to punch, kick and torment the homeless man living in the wooded area, believing it was so funny they put it up on YouTube for the world to see.

At one point on the video they gave him an apology, followed by a knee to the gut.

"I'm trying to relax. My let got a cramp in it," Ivins said.

As for what he thinks about his two young attackers, "Not much."

Police quickly arrested 20-year-old Taylor Giresie and a 17-year-old minor because the video is crystal clear.

The images disgusted Giresie's long time neighbors.

"He's been in and out of foster homes. I'm not saying what he did was right. He's had a really screwed up family life. His father died last week. He was a total alcoholic," said Giresie's neighbor, Bobby.

Mayor Matthew Doherty says he's seen an incredible outpouring of support for the 50-year-old victim from the residents of Wall Township to countless calls from across the country.

"I have a coat and gloves," Ivins said.

"I can't tell you how many messages I got by text and Facebook about this. Everyone wants to do something for this man," Mayor Doherty said.

The Wall Township Police Department has coordinated efforts with Wall Helps Its People (WHIP) to set up a donation fund for the assault victim. Anyone interested in making a monetary donation can mail it to the following address: WHIP P.O.Box 1214, Wall, NJ 07719.

WHIP will not be accepting clothing or food donations on Mr. Ivins' behalf. Monies received will be used to provide Mr. Ivins with food, clothing, shelter and other necessities that he may need. Please indicate on the memo portion of your check "David Ivins" or include a note indicating where you would like your donation to be directed. Any clothing or food products for the victim can be dropped at the Belmar Police Department.

Rutgers grad in Jersey City mob beating improving

Eyewitness NewsJERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A Rutgers graduate student who was the victim of a vicious beating that left him in a coma is showing signs of recovery.

There are reports that 22-year-old David Strucinski opened his eyes for a few minutes on Monday.

Police say he was in a cab with friends when they spotted other friends in a street fight in Bayonne.

Strucinksi jumped in to help and was attacked.

So far, six teens have been arrested.

2 arrested, more sought in NJ street mob beating

Web produced by Bill King, Eyewitness NewsJERSEY CITY (WABC) -- Two people are under arrest and police are searching for more suspects after a man was beaten into a coma by a street mob in New Jersey.

The incident happened early Sunday in Bayonne, not far from the Quick-Chek on Broadway. Twenty-two-year-old Dawid Strucinski, who goes by the name David, just graduated from Rutgers and was looking for his first job. Now, he's fighting for his life.

A fundraiser is scheduled for Friday to help pay for Strucinski's medical bills.

Police in Bayonne say it was a vicious attack, and now two of the young women believed to be involved are in custody. One is charged with rioting.

Strucinski was walking home with friends when they spotted another friend surrounded by a mob of people.

"He was getting pushed around in the middle of the street," friend David Aziz said. "So me, Dan and Dave go run to diffuse the situation and get everyone back."

But there was no diffusing the confrontation, and the mob turned on the friends, separating them.

"I got hit in the back of the head, dropped and got stomped out by a couple of people," Dan Sautkin said. "I feel like the same thing happened to Dave, except when he got hit, he got instantly knocked out. So when they were kicking him, he was already unconscious."

Strucinski was kicked repeatedly and suffered severe head injuries. Police say there were more than a dozen attackers, at least nine men and four women.

"From what I understand, it wasn't a targeted attack," friend Steve Grau said. "It was just those people were out that night, and they were looking to do exactly what they did."

Strucinski was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he remains there in a coma. Officials say he is breathing on his own.

His friends hope the fundraiser, at the local Polish-American hall, will help pay his hospital expenses.
