NJ Senate panel approves teen indoor-tanning ban

  ANDREW DUFFELMEYERTRENTON -- Legislation limiting teens' access to indoor tanning has been approved by a New Jersey Senate panel, but not without significant changes from a measure the Assembly approved last month.

The Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee approved the measure Monday.

Its version bans indoor tanning by anyone under 16, while 16- and 17-year olds could tan as long as a parent is present when the tanning sessions are purchased. It also prohibits children tanning on consecutive days, increase fines ten-fold and allows for license suspension for repeat violations.

The Assembly approved legislation last month that bars anyone under 18 from using indoor tanning beds.

The state now bars anyone under 14 from using tanning beds. Written parental consent is needed for those 14 to 17.

NJ Senate approves 'sexting' legislation

  Eyewitness NewsTRENTON -- New Jersey teenagers caught texting sexually explicit photos or posting them online could avoid prosecution if Gov. Chris Christie signs a measure passed by the state Senate.

The Senate voted 39-0 Wednesday to approve the bill. It passed the Assembly in March.

The bill targets "sexting," the practice of sending explicit photos by cell phone, email or Internet posts. The nationwide problem has confounded parents, schools and police.

The bill gives first-time offenders the chance to complete an education program.

Lawmakers took up the issue after a 14-year-old girl allegedly uploaded nude pictures of herself and was arrested on child pornography charges last summer. She eventually received probation and court-ordered counseling Christie spokesman Kevin Roberts says the governor will review the legislation but hasn't indicated whether he will sign it.
