NJ Transit Memorial Day weekend plans
Eyewitness NewsNEWARK (WABC) -- NJ Transit has released its plans for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Details are below:
On Friday, May 25, extra outbound trains will operate on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex, and Port Jervis lines starting at approximately 1 p.m. One outbound Pascack Valley train (#9653, leaving Hoboken at 2:51 pm) will extend its existing service to terminate in Spring Valley. Extra buses will operate from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on more than two dozen bus routes starting around noon. Visit njtransit.com for details.
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all lines. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend schedule. Newark Light Rail will operate on a Saturday schedule. River Line will operate on a Sunday schedule. Bus schedules vary by route-customers are advised to check their timetables or visit njtransit.com for schedule information.Summer Savings
With Memorial Day marking the "unofficial" start of the summer recreational season, this weekend is a great time for customers to take advantage of NJ TRANSIT's discounted travel packages to destinations including the Jersey Shore, Six Flags Great Adventure and Monmouth Park:
Beach Packages: Save up to $6.50 on admission to one of five beaches - Long Branch, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach and Belmar - by purchasing round-trip train fare and a beach pass for one price at NJ TRANSIT ticket vending machines (choose "Special Promotions" and select "Beach Package") or at ticket windows. Customers can purchase the package for $31.50 from New York Penn Station or any station on the Main, Bergen County or Pascack Valley lines (except from Metro-North stations), and for $23.50 from Hoboken Terminal or Newark Penn Station. Shore EZride Jitney provides shuttle service to beaches, shopping and dining locations in Long Branch, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Bradley Beach Friday through Sunday. For jitney info and shore activities, go to visitmonmouth.com. Six Flags Great Adventure or Hurricane Harbor: Save up to $51 by purchasing round-trip bus transportation and park admission together. NJ TRANSIT provides express bus service to Six Flags from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, Newark Penn Station, Philadelphia Greyhound Terminal and the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden. Monmouth Park: Board a train anywhere on NJ TRANSIT's rail system and save up to $6.00 when you travel to Monmouth Park Racetrack. Simply purchase a round-trip package to Monmouth Park from NJ TRANSIT ticket vending machines (choose "Special Promotions" and select "Monmouth Park") or at ticket windows, and receive Grandstand Admission and an official track program for $1 plus round-trip train fare.For details on NJ TRANSIT's Summer Services and customer discounts, visit njtransit.com/summer.
On weekends, kids ride free on NJT
Every weekend, families riding NJ TRANSIT can save with the Family Super Saver Fare, which allows two children 11 and younger to travel free with each fare-paying adult. For the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the program will be extended and in effect from 7 p.m. Friday, May 25 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 29.

Hitting the beach for the holiday weekend
PLEASANT BEACH (WABC) -- The summer season officially kicks off this weekend, and many people are using the three-day holiday as a reason to take a trip to the beach despite the high cost of gas.
All along the Garden State Parkway, the price of gas has come down a bit. Still high, but People are filling up and getting ready for the long holiday weekend.
Pat and Steve Ruggiero were filling up and heading to Atlantic City, staying closer to home like many in this economy.
"A lot of people can't afford it and are having trouble. A lot of people are staying close to home," Steve Ruggiero said.Like Steven Grater. He's been on the beach all day, but it's a once a year thing for him. His house flooded during Hurricane Irene, and it's been tough.
"We are doing the best we can, having fun and squeezing whatever we can out of the rest o the year," Grater said.
Businesses all along the Jersey Shore hear what Steven Is saying, so they are offering deals.
"We're doing our part offering deals where we can so it makes it easier to bring the family down," Marilu Halverson, Jenkinson's Boardwalk, said.
If you are still looking for a rental, Paul Ward of Ward Realty says he still has some great deals too, like a 3 bedroom cottage, feet from the ocean, for $1750 a week.
"What we are seeing is people coming through our door sick and tired of being sick and tired, looking do the best deal they can find," Ward said.

Drivers hit the highways for holiday weekend
Eyewitness NewsBLOOMFIELD (WABC) -- Millions of people are expected to hit the road for the July Fourth holiday weekend. So what better time for gas prices to drop? The price for a regular gallon of gas along the New Jersey Turnpike dropped from $3.64 to $3.59 Friday.
AAA says 39 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday weekend, and many have already hit the road across the Tri-State area.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority predicts 1-.5 million vehicles will travel the Garden State Parkway Friday. The Port Authority, which projects 2.6 million vehicles will cross its bridges and tunnels, says it will fully staff the toll booths to help speed things along.Most of the cars on the parkway are headed to the shore. A shuttle will link train stations with beaches and shopping areas in Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach and Belmar.
But for those with their sights set on other holiday weekend destinations, it may not be too late to plan that trip. Some airlines are offering last-minute deals.
"I always advise people, if you look at an airfare on a particular route and you think it's really way out of your budget, come back a day later, a couple days later, an hour later and look again, you may be surprised, because fares yo-yo all the time," said George Hobica, of AirfareWatchdog.com.
While the bargains are out there, the holiday getaway is costing more this year. A AAA and IHS Global insight survey reports the average traveler will spend $807 this weekend. That's an an increase of more than 25 percent over last year.

NJ school district might ban weekend homework
Eyewitness NewsGALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Students in a southern New Jersey school district might not have to crack the books on weekends and holidays. The Galloway Township school district is recommending that homework be assigned only Monday through Thursday. In addition, the district may decide that no more than 10 minutes of homework multiplied by a student's grade level be assigned per night.
Superintendent Annette Giaquinto told The Press of Atlantic City the idea is to ensure students are not assigned busywork and to give them time for family and extracurricular activities.
Some school board members worry that parents have more time on weekends and holidays to help their children with homework.The school board is not expected to vote on the recommendations until July or August.

3 Fun Places To Enjoy A Weekend Beach Getaway In New Jersey
When looking for an easy getaway from New York City, Philadelphia or anywhere in between there are many options. Some of the easiest and quickest include Cape May, Atlantic City and Ocean City, New Jersey. While all of these locations are on the beach in New Jersey, that's pretty much all that they have in common. Each location offers many different activities, as well as a very different atmosphere.
Cape May New Jersey
On the southern tip of New Jersey sits the beautiful town of Cape May. Cape May is a peaceful, relaxing town, with a historic atmosphere. Cape May New Jersey was a very popular seaside resort in the 1800s. During this time many people built unique and artistic cottages along the shore.
Over the years residents have taken a great deal of time and effort to maintain and restore these cottages. As a result, the Victorian style architecture of that time is still prevalent today and is a large part of many of the establishments and homes in the area.
Cape May New Jersey also has a very "small town" feel, which makes it very different from the other beach towns in the area. But, while Cape May New Jersey may maintain that small town feel, there is still plenty to do. Many lovely shops and over 40 different restaurants, plus of course all there is to do at the beach and on the ocean help make Cape May New Jersey an excellent east coast getaway!
Atlantic City
Atlantic City is known for gambling, amazingly huge hotels and of course, the infamous board walk. While Atlantic City has had some difficulty in the past, it has experienced a renaissance in the last few years and has become an excellent getaway again.
Atlantic City offers a unique combination of beaches, shopping, restaurants, and is one of the only areas in the east coast that has gambling on a scale comparable to that of Las Vegas. There is constant nightlife and always something new and exciting to experience. While a stark contrast to Cape May New Jersey, Atlantic City may be exactly the fun, high-energy getaway you are looking for.
Ocean City New Jersey
While Atlantic City offers an exciting, high energy vacation, and Cape May New Jersey can be a peaceful, relaxing getaway, visiting Ocean City falls about in the middle. There is night life and usually something going on at all hours in Ocean City. But, there are also quiet, "off the beaten path" areas of the town as well.
As far as things to do, Ocean City has a true boardwalk, complete with amusement rides, water parks, arcades, mini-golf and all the other attractions one would expect. And, don't forget that special food that is a "must have" when walking along the boardwalk; caramel corn, cotton candy, salt water taffy, and of course, Boardwalk Fries! Or head out into the ocean on a charter, rent a boat for the entire family (or vacation group), or just lounge on the beach with a book. There are many options for fun in the sun during a getaway in Ocean City.
These 3 towns all offer access to the Atlantic Ocean and the miles of sandy beaches that the area is known for. Choosing between them is easy because each offers a unique style of getaway for visitors. Whether looking for the quiet, historical charm of Cape May New Jersey, the wild night life of Atlantic City or the fun of the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ these towns can help create the perfect east coast getaway.
