Tolls rise on NJ highways for 2012

By DAVID PORTERNEWARK -- For the second time in three years, toll rates have risen on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

The latest increases, which went into effect Sunday morning, are the second part of a two-phase toll increase adopted by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority under Gov. Jon Corzine in October 2008.

The first increase, at the end of 2008, amounted to about 40 percent on both the parkway and turnpike.

Under the new rates, the price of driving the length of the turnpike goes from $9.05 to $13.85 for cash-paying customers.

E-ZPass customers, who had paid $6.80, will now pay $10.40.

Two-axle trucks now pay $28.45, up from $18.60.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority sought the rate increases to fund $7 billion in improvements over the next 10 years.

NJT and GSP tolls increasing on New Year's Day

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEW JERSEY (WABC) -- If your commute takes you along two of the country's busiest toll roads, you're in for a rude awakening New Year's Day.

Tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway are going up, and for some drivers, that could mean a difference of several hundred dollars next year.

Commuters Eyewitness News talked to really feel like they're getting squeezed.

Tolls are going up on the Turnpike and the Parkway, and they recently went up at the Hudson River crossings.

Even NJ Transit bus and train fares are up!

"It's disgusting, they're not offering anything and they're just taking more money," said Jeff Tanner, a driver.

More money is right, tolls on the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway will go up by as much as 50% in 2012.

"The gas goes up and the tolls go up and it's just more and more," said Janet Wojtowicz, a driver.

The toll hikes were approved in 2008 as a two-step process.

"I don't like it but its part of life and the condition on the roads demands that they improve them," said Paul Mitchell, a driver.

To illustrate how much a cash paying driver at peak hours would pay, imagine driving from Exit 4 on the NJ Turnpike North to exit 14C and then taking the Holland Tunnel into Lower Manhattan.

In January 2011, tolls for the trip would cost you $14.70. In 2012, it'll cost you $22.25, that's more than a 50%increase. And that's before you pay for gas!

"I'm going to think twice before driving here again. I'm not going to drive here again, next time I'll fly," said Omar Ali, a driver.

GWB stop yields $250K in unpaid tolls

Eyewitness NewsFORT LEE, N.J. -- A traffic stop on the George Washington Bridge may have yielded a jackpot for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Port Authority police say a car carrier owned by Illinois-based Fleet Car Lease was stopped at 9 a.m. Friday for having an inoperable E-ZPass transponder. Further investigation revealed that the truck had nine previous E-ZPass violations totaling more than $800.

Apparently that was only the tip of the iceberg: Port Authority spokesman Al Della Fave says the company that operates the truck owes the Port Authority more than $250,000 in unpaid tolls and fees.

Company officials could not be reached for comment on Saturday.

A phone number listed for the firm is no longer in service.

Report: Tolls from NJ to NYC could soon reach $10

Eyewitness NewsTRENTON (WABC) -- There are predictions that tolls on the bridges and tunnels leading into New York City from New Jersey could soon reach or even pass the $10 mark.

The New York Times reports some elected officials point to Governor Chris Christie's push to finance transportation with big increases in transit fares and higher tolls on highways.

Just last May, New Jersey Transit fares went up an average of 22 percent while service was cut back.
